SCVNGR, the check-in/scavenger hunt game you can play on your Android or iPhone handset, has been struggling to find its legs against rivals like Gowalla and Foursquare. A humble listing of 10-50,000 downloads from the Android Market is chump change compared to the 250,000 plus (most likely even greater, maybe even nearer to a million, but the Android Market doesn’t assign a higher bracket) associated with the other check-in-centric services. SCVNGR is hoping to change all of this by adding in a new feature that looks to create a new and fun way to increase the social nature of check-ins.
Their aptly named Social Check-in feature allows users to “bump” their phones together to establish one big group check-in, encouraging more people to get in on the game and get out with friends to travel to as many locations possible. For now this feature should set SCVNGR apart from other similar services, but methinks they will be quick to follow with their own similar functions, quickly stealing whatever thunder this may give the app.
