Fix for Samsung Epic 4G Touch’s Loss of Signal Bug Reportedly On the Way

11

Many of you Epic 4G Touch owners know about the loss of signal bug. It basically causes the phone to fail to reconnect to the Sprint network if you often dip in and out of coverage. I personally have experienced this bug frequently in an area that is known for really bad coverage. That’s notable because many users suggest they only usually see it in bad coverage areas, making it an isolated incident.

Even if it is isolated, though, it’s still a very bad bug. Sprint has been taking a look into these claims, apparently, and have found out the exact cause of this issue. Thankfully it can be fixed using nothing but a quick and easy software update. Here’s the explanation of what’s going on:

It is isolated to areas with spotty coverage, which is why some don’t experience it at all. If you are in 4G and leave 4G coverage, or in 3G coverage and leave 3G coverage, and in the process of sending packets, there is apparently a bug where the phone does not detect this and would just give up after it could no longer talk to the old tower.

A user reportedly received a testing patch after voicing his concerns with a Samsung developer. We’re said to be getting Android 2.3.6, baseband SPD710.10.S.EK02 and build GINGERBREAD.EK02. All of this sounds great if true. [via Android Central]

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. I call shenanigans.  Same issue plagued the Epic 4G for a year.  Fool us once, shame on you, fool us twice, shame on us all.

  2. …i must not live in an area with SPOTTY coverage.

  3. I would love for this to be true but none of this has been officially been confirmed. I’ve been following the thread over at XDA and I won’t believe it until the build leaks or Samsprint confirms. LOS sucks!

  4. I’ve noticed this problem when I go into brick buildings where signal loss is almost instantaneous. The phone beeps to let me know the signal has been lost. When I exit the building, the phone can take up to ten minutes to re-find the signal if I just leave the phone in phone-mode. If I put the phone into airplane mode before I enter into a large concrete or brick structure (school building or large arena), the phone will only take 2-3 minutes to find the signal again. The problem was even worse when the phone was rooted. it would not find a signal unless I rebooted the phone. I would take the phone back to Sprint but the superuser icon will not go away. I also hope the fix will be sent via software.

  5. Looking forward to this for sure. This isn’t the Epic 4G, it’ll work! Ha ha. We will see. The weak radios need a little love too.

  6. am i the only one who doesnt have access to as many apps on the market as i should, like n.o.v.a. 2? only a few gameloft games actually show up im my market. but i’ve only had this problem once when going through a tunnel on the train

  7. Same bug plagues most recent Samsung phones.  I’ve owned the Samsung Moment, Epic, and now the Nexus S.  All of them have exhibited the same bug.  When you are on a fringe area, they disconnect and you have to reboot to connect.  Sad Samsung hardware.  I wish they would change the Nexus line back over to another company.

  8. They are idiots, this is the reason I left sprint. It didn’t matter about how
much signal you have. I was connected to my airrave and had it happen, full bars
at work and got it. It took them this long, ridiculous! Just think how long
they’ll take for ics. They haven’t changed.

  9. This isn’t a Samsung issue, it’s a sprint poor coverage issue. I’ve used many Samsung devices on other carriers and never had an issue with this. So for someone to blame Samsung and not your own carrier that spends more money on Nascar than building their cell structure up is rediculous. And don’t get me wrong, I love Nascar but these are reasons that I stay away from sprint in my area. I’m sure in some places their coverage is great.

    1. Strange, I have Sprint and no issues with loss of service… Oh wait, that’s because I have a HTC phone because I already learned my lesson with Samsung devices. They are plagued with buggy software. Exactly what is causing this problem, buggy software. Keep paying double what I pay, I’ll stick with Sprint and their “crappy network” which works perfect for me.

  10. What A LOAD OF CRAP. I had the EPIC TOUCH for a month. No problems then boom Damn los problem. NOT SPOTTY COVERAGE. BULL CRAP. And no It’s not just sprint. IT”S SAMSUNG! EPIC TOUCH.
