ASUS Cube side angle

For those looking to add a little smarts to their television experience can now find the ASUS Cube (version 2) on Groupon for only $50. For those unaware, that’s about half-off. But the 50% discount is only half the story — as tipped by the folks at Fatwallet you can receive an additional $20 off via manufacturer rebate direct from ASUS. When all is said and done, that brings the Google TV equipped device down to Chromecast-like pricing at $30. Yikes!

ASUS Cube ports and remote

Groupon limits purchases to only 3 per person, and is only available for the next 11 days, or while supplies last. Also something to keep in mind, the ASUS’ rebate promotion ends on April 30th, so make sure you don’t waste any time sending it in. The coolest part? The ASUS Cube features HDMI passthrough, meaning you don’t have to switch inputs when switching from live television, to Netflix, Crunchyroll or web browsing. The Roku, Chromecast, and Amazon Fire TV can’t beat that. Full details can be found in the links below, and if you’re still on the fence, don’t forget to check out our ASUS Cube review here.

  1. tempting…is it worth getting if i already have a chromecast and an apple tv though? does it run spotify?

    1. No it doesn’t. I have the cube and I haven’t used it for 6 months. I am just waiting for it to be updated to 4.4.2

      1. Will it for sure be updated?

        1. Your guess is as good as mine.

      2. Can it play local content? Like, can I plug a flashdrive into the back and play videos off of it?

        1. Plex + Chromecast.

          1. Doesn’t play codecs that aren’t supported by the CC.

        2. It lists these as supported formats. Video File Extension : MP4, MOV, Xvid, AVI, ASF, WMV, MKV, FLV, TS, MTS. There are two usb ports. I haven’t used it, but that’s what I seen while checking out their site.

        3. I havent had any issues. I use vimu and it seems to play all the videos well. KM player is out now and I have been thinking of trying that.

      3. Is it a full Web browser? Will it play flash and other video content directly in sites like ABC, NBC, CBS etc.?

        1. On my Vizio Co Star I get flash. BUT…ABC and all the big networks block streaming from their site. You can’t even do Hulu through the browser, I don’t think there’s an app yet for Hulu Plus.

        2. Yes. Depends. Sometimes it does sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes when it does it doesn’t do it well. I was able to watch Wonder Showzen on MTV for a while but it seems that after a bit the system gets bogged down and I have to reset.

  2. Looks a bit like the Borg cube. Scares me. I don’t want to be assimilated. Sticking with Chromecast.

    1. If it had glowing green lights too you would prob crap your pants. lol.

    2. Lol

      1. You will be Americanised. Rights of sovereignty are irrelevant. Non-fossil fuel acquisitions or utilisations are irrelevant.

    3. Upvote for Star Trek references! They’re way too scarce iv general!

  3. I have two Sony GoogleTV units that work flawlessly. Is there any reason to replace them with this?

    1. No.

    2. no dont get this unless u want to give it as a gift.

  4. Number one killer of Google TV is no Hulu. Add this one thing and it’s a game changer. Far more robust device than the others but without Hulu we’re having switch over to our Roku and or Chromecast. Personally, I love Chromecast.

  5. I JUST bought a Chromecast this Monday. =.[

Something TOLD my a** to not buy anything and wait until I get paid this very Friday. =.=

I got a Chromecast to use my TV like a SmartTV. Just for media. This would have been better. =.[

    1. Honestly I think you are better off with the Chromecast. My knee jerk reaction is to buy one of these, but it doesn’t really do anything I can’t do on like 4 other devices in my house. Now that Plex has Chromecast support, and just about every major streaming service besides Amazon Instant Video does too, chromecast is still your best bet.

      1. Cool. I don’t really know how Chromecast will help me. I just wanted to watch Netflix from my phone since our WiFi isn’t the best. Wired isn’t good since my phone slowly dies. =.[

I also picked up this Slim Port adapter for like $10 for my Nexus 7. Mad I had to buy another cord. =.=

    2. You’re better off with the chromecast, don’t worry. You got the right one

      1. My Chromecast came in today. I’m playing with it now. So useful. LoL!! Why haven’t I had this before? =.P

This thing is really solving all my problems right now.

        1. I know what you mean, got mine last week and thought the exact same thing.

      2. i agree i got both and i use my chromecast more and disconnected my asus google tv becuz it was turn on my tv when i am not home for no reason.

    3. No browser though, and the casting of a Chrome tab just lags so much. This was a no brainer purchase for me. Plus Chromecast dont have the play store. Ill use both equally.

      1. although chromecast doesnt have the playstore the asus google tv is an overrated experience. all apps lag badly on this device and the IR blaster is weak. chromecast is far better experience and its stable. for a 30 price tag go for it but dont look for something amazing.

  6. What firmware is currently on this bad boy?

  7. Got one just for the hell of it, couldn’t pass up the deal even though I rarely watch live TV anymore. I just have my PC connected to my TV via HDMI.

    1. Ordered one too, I was thinking a Roku or something but this will work well for what I need. I was previously playing videos off my playstation, which is kind of annoying since that’s all I use it for these days.

  8. http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/00/00/51/07/04/00/5107040010._V340664250_.pdf is the link for the rebate. The link in this article isn’t working for me.

  9. Use the Groupon app to get an additional $10 off (when you create a new Groupon account). This brings the total cost down to $20 (plus tax, after rebate). It’s not just cheap, it’s $113 dollars off from the Amazon price!

$15 less than a Chromecast, does more, *and* has an HDMI passthough. This deal is so good I got it even though I have absolutely no use for it.

  10. no delivery to Canada obviously, thanks for the disapointment

  11. I’m getting a few of these!

  12. Just got one. Hoping it will get updated to 4.2.2 soon.

  13. I’d love something like this, but it has no audio out. I use a (ceiling-mounted) projector and would need to buy a separate HDMI/audio splitter.

Not a deal-breaker, but an annoyance I’d rather not deal with.

  14. Does anyone know if the remote can be paired with a PC?
