Nexus 5 vegetables camera sample

We know the Nexus 5 is coming. There have been so many leaks, it’s become more like a steady flow of information out of Google and her employees. Take these camera samples posted over the weekend from Googlers on G+.

At first glance, they appear to be nothing more than average everyday pictures of vegetables and family. However, diving into the EXIF data we find the device used to take the picture is listed as the Nexus 5. A few more images was discovered showing a strapping young Googler during what appears to be a family Halloween event at the Googleplex. How fun.

Yes, folks. These are our first camera samples of the Nexus 5. Full resolution images posted below. Feel free to dissect.

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

  1. not to sound like a pessimist, but those photos on Google Plus could be auto-enhance. But hopefully, if anything, this is a real indication of the new camera sensors in the Nexus 5

    1. Hey who cares, could optimize the crap out of my N4 photos and they wouldn’t look that good.

      1. Your phone must be broken then, my N4 takes pics just as good as the samples here. These are not that impressive.

        1. Nope… its always blurred and it generally takes about 5 refocuses for it to get a decent focus on what I want to photograph.

  2. Wonder if Mr. Rafiqul would’ve posted that comment if he knew the audience it would be getting…

  3. First potentially intentional leak of the day. Hopefully the “calm before the storm” from last week is over.

I’m no photog expert, but those photos look pretty great!

  4. Looks like pics from my Nexus 4. So far, not impressed with the cam. Definitely getting this phone though.

    1. Visit the source link and zoom in on the backgrounds in the photos. A million times less grainy and much clearer than the Nexus 4. It will definitely be an improvement.

      1. Yeah, zooming in I was quite impressed with the quality. Now I am officially jonesing for this phone! :O

        1. let’s hope you stick with it this time Chris. you didn’t last long with your n4.

      2. Ah, OK, I see what you mean. I didn’t zoom in…..that is definitely impressive. Nice upgrade over the Graininess of the 4!

  5. Its shows exposure and F number, i dont get that on my Nexus 4, and also previous posts from her have her taking pics with iphone5…strange from a google employee, maybe she can change the EXIf data?

    1. Not particularly strange, as strange as it may seem at first glance…

Hasn’t there been confirmation in the past that some of the higher-up suits carry iStuff? Keep in mind they have a well-curated app ecosystem for iStuff as well.

      1. I work at the big S and we are allowed to carry other devices as personal phones :) it’s normal.

        1. Sony? Of course they’d have to allow you to carry other brand devices.

          ;)

          1. no..that company is a lowercase s.
            Uppercase capital S :)

  6. that baby is one head turn away from freaking out…

  7. Album was just made private. Ha.

  8. Is google just following a reputation of Bad camera on Nexus devices, despite N5 being basing on a very good LG G2?

    1. I was really impressed by the camera output. Not sure what you were expecting.. DSLR quality?

      1. I was expecting it as good as G2.

        1. I literally have the G2 in my hands right now. I’ve taken countless pictures with this camera. These are literally just as good. I think the G2 will still have the upperhand with optical image stabilization, but sensor wise, we’re looking at very image quality.

          1. The Nexus 5 will have OIS, too.

          2. Literally.

          3. Thought N5 will have OIS. No?

          4. Ah, yeah. According to leaks it will.

  9. This article just confirms that Chris Chavez is a racist..

    1. I am confused. This article is pretty tame.

      1. Really? This says otherwise. http://i.imgur.com/MBfcDZJ.jpg

        1. I know you just didn’t…

  10. Is it bring your kid to work day??

    1. Ya know, I laughed at your comment not because of the photos, but because I thought you were trying to say this article must have been written by a child. Hilarious.

  11. Calm down people. These are bright-outdoor-daylight pictures. They don’t tell you anything about the non-ideal conditions capability of the camera. Now if we can get indoor shots that would mean something.

What do I care about anyway, I’m getting the phone in either case.

    1. it means its still better than nexus 4 bright outdoor daylight pics

      1. Possibly, I can’t really tell the difference unless I have the same conditions with my Nexus 4. All I am saying is that the indoor pictures are going to tell the real story.

        1. Well I have the G2 and came from the Nexus 4 and I can tell you that the G2 takes much much better pictures in poor conditions.

          1. If that’s the case in reality, more power to you mate. But lately Google has been known to cripple the Nexus line. Eg neutered battery compared to G2

          2. That’s to be expected since the LG G2 has a whopping 13MP camera while your previous Nexus 4 only had an 8MP shooter. The LG G2 (13MP) and Nexus 5 (8MP) do not have the same camera.

          3. Ahh, I thought they were basically the same phones. Alright then.. well I can at least say then that it is fast as hell! So that is nice.

          4. Megapixels aren’t everything.

        2. I can tell the difference. It’s much better.

  12. Chris, any chance you could post the full-size pictures?

    1. The other images have been removed, but if you click the veggie picture, you can get a bigger preview and if you “open in a new tab” it will show up full res.

      1. And… if you use Google Chrome browser + HoverZoom extension, you’ll always get the larger pictures without clicking into a new tab… just move the mouse over the picture and BOOM goes the dynamite.

  13. And of course the camera sucks………

    1. Hmm. And, of course, your post sucks.

Way to prejudge the camera performance before it’s even officially released or being used in multiple lighting scenarios. Kudos.

    2. Seriously? There is nothing wrong with them images. Unless you’re some Photoshop user. Those photos look no different than the ones I take on my phone.

    3. What? You must have been looking at different pictures than the ones posted here.

  14. *checks PlayStore for 653rd time today…*

    1. I have been doing that regularly

    2. Why? Do you think the Nexus 5 is just going to show up on the Play store with no big story about it like it was nothing? There will be an official announcement.

      1. Well it already did once.

        1. Yes, but you couldn’t buy it or even go to the details page. I think O’s Fan91 was thinking it would just quietly show up for sale.

  15. The original link to the picture is now dead, so she definitely took it down. Rest of the images on her G+ profile were taken from the iPhone 5. So she basically took just the one image from the Nexus 5 and uploaded it (before taking it down of course). Odd eh?

FFS, why don’t they just silently list the phone in the Play Store and let the customers do the rest. We don’t need an extravagant announcement with song and dance like Apple does. Just give us the phone already. Sigh.

  16. This is ridiculous. Google just needs to announce it already. They’ve taken all the fun out of this for me. Im not even anticipating it anymore, it’s just annoying now.

    1. This is how I feel.

    2. How are they taking the fun out of a release for you when they have not announced nor are ready to announce a release? You mean, the blog and gossip sites are taking the fun out it for you, since they are the ones leaking and speculating.

      1. They haven’t announced it, but they keep leaking the hell out of it :P

      2. Google directly benefits from these leaks and a lot of the leaks are probably orchestrated by Google. At some point people grow tired of the leaks and Google loses potential business. Given Google HAS YET to release a phone without screwing up I welcome the comical mishaps that will ensue.

        1. the thing is with these kinds of leaks and rumors you have to go looking for them. If you are tired then just stop looking. It’s not like they are dropping “leaks” on google. com homepage advertisement banners… or putting 15 second leaks before your youtube videos.
People who are interested can go on the wild goose chase, people who arent can just not look for the wild goose.

    3. I find it funny people are annoyed. Keep being annoyed. It’s funny.

  17. Nowadays, pictures are looking the same. I don’t care for any improvements any more.. I also don’t even notice anything different unless I see side-by-side comparisons.

    1. perhaps you are using a good camera, i can clearly notice the difference between my nexus 4 and someone else’s iphone/gs4/htc one.

      1. No. It’s just I don’t have an eye for photos. I can’t tell if this photo was really posted by a Nexus 5 or an iPhone 5. Photos look the same to me.

        1. ah, i dont have a great eye either, but when my gf tells me the camera sucks in my phone n then i look at the ones she takes on her phone i go, oh… yeah it does…

          1. Well yea. I need a side-by-side comparison, or I won’t see the difference. LoL!!

I do know that the Nexus series didn’t have the best cameras. I remember looking at pictures I took with like my GS1 and my Nexus 1 and the Nexus 1 was just so horrible and dark it made me cry. =.P

  18. idk if its the camera or the photographer but im not impressed by the pictures.

  19. LOL @ the second comment in the screenshot.. The guy has some admiration… Please Miss Pavni…. write back to him…:)

  20. These are nowhere near the quality of my Cannon EOS mark III. I’ll just buy an iPhone.

    1. LOL! I swear, man…

    2. If that is some sort of a joke its hilarious!

    3. Funny guy. I’m going to go use windex on my eyeballs after that.

  21. “Wow it sure is boring here in Mom’s basement. Maybe I’ll go look at the EXIF data on some Googlers’ G+ photos.”

    1. As boring in your mom’s basement? Must be pretty boring for you down there to make comments about an article you are trying to poke fun at. Me, I just like being a wise and in no one’s basement :)

  22. The only thing left to show off when announced is whatever KitKat brings.

Not impressed, but it’s good. Much better and I have to good enough at the least compared to previous Nexus phones. I would have to see a better picture in a review or for myself when I purchase.

  23. seems way oversaturated to me

  24. WOW! Phandroid managed to create an article from a picture of few vegetables… Welcome to the web!

    1. Well, I mean there were more pictures. Either way, the fact that it’s the first camera samples we’ve seen from an unreleased device that’s going to be one of the biggest of the year… yeah. Pretty newsworthy.

    1. That Meizu has an AMAZING camera. Holy crap. Easily the best I’ve seen on a smartphone to date :O

      1. Who knows maybe its a sign of things to come.

    2. holy s…..mokes.
superb quality! this one is good enough to smoke the nokia :P
