Phandroid News App Update – New Stack Widget, Greater Device Compatibility, and More

34

Ask any developer and they’ll tell you that cooking up applications for Android is tricky business. Many times, initial releases are plagued with force closes and something as simple sounding as getting an app to run perfectly across a vast sea of Android devices is easier said than done.

Despite all this, we’ve been riding our app developer Steve pretty hard, hounding him to bring our recently revamped Phandroid News app up to snuff. Well, he’s been putting in work, addressing user concerns, offering greater device compatibility for our beloved app. This means, if you the app wasn’t working properly before, now would be a good time to give it another go. The app also introduces an all new “stack widget” for Honeycomb+ devices, giving your device a widget with added eye candy.

Of course, all apps — including ours — live and die by their Play Store ratings, so don’t forget to update and/or give the app the rating you feel it deserves. Oh, and to help bring you guys bigger ‘n better updates and features, we’re looking for some more of your feedback. If you can spare a minute, visit the link below and let us know where you think we can improve our app. Appreciate it, guys.

  1. I love the new layout!

  2. I like it! A lot!

  3. why is the news widget 3×2 when it looks 3×1. and It cannot be resized.

    1. It use to be 3×1 and now is 3×2. Try to remove it and add it back again. The widget should be able to resize both horizontal and vertical.. as I just double checked the setting. Let me know if your still having issues and I can help you out even more.

      1. Yeah, I’m seeing it 3×2 and when I resize to 4×1 it just becomes a single unreadable line. It looks like it isn’t taller than 1, but it won’t display if it isn’t 2 height. This is on ICS with GO Launcher EX. I like the new look and smoothness. Just need to work out some of the kinks. I’m going to have to keep the Phandroid app’s 4×1 News widget for now.

        1. I will make sure I update this widget to work 4×1 or create one to fill that need. Thanks for the feedback!

  4. I like that this app is no longer force closing everytime I re-open it. It is not however saving my articles that I was previously reading.

    1. If you are reading an article and dont his the back button this will remain “open” or in a paused state. It will only close the app if you hit the back button. Maybe I miss understood what your saying?

      1. Basically I would be reading an article and hit home to leave the app. When I went back to the app it would go to the main article screen and refresh. It doesn’t appear to be doing it anymore after this most recent update.

Edit: Thanks for the reply! :)

  5. Awesome app guys. Keep up the progress.

  6. I like the look of the app, however it will not load any stories for me, whether on Cell or Wifi.
    Anyone else?

    1. Ok, I uninstalled it an reinstalled. All is well now.
      Thank you for the app.

      1. Glad to hear! Email support if you have any issues.. you can work directly with me to resolve any issues.

  7. Woohoo! Just last night I’d gotten fed up with the previous version cause it wouldn’t load the articles just say at loading. So I uninstalled the app. But this one works like a charm. Nice job!

    1. Thanks. I am still sorting out a cache clean up issue on some devices so if it does sneak up again contact the support email and I can work directly with you in solving any issues. Thanks for the feedback!

  8. The App looks great. Widget is useless now.

    1. Explain. I am more then happy to take requests or help solve issues your having but I can’t help you with just what you stated. We even have a UserVoice page now: goo.gl/YFcPx where you can make feature requests.

  9. I’m loving the stack widget. Nice work Steve.

    1. And disqus, I can’t comment on my work computer bc we still use old browser. This has made my day. Thanks.

  10. What’s the difference between Phandroid News and Phandroid app?

    1. Phandroid app is the old forum/news app. Comments never worked on it for news. It was definitely time for an upgrade.

      Love it Steve!

  11. If I login to Disqus here on my desktop via G+, what username and password do I use to login to Disqus on the Phandroid News app?

    1. I had to create a Disqus account and then link it to my G+ account.

      1. Thanks for letting us know. I honestly created my Disqus account so long ago I forget how I originally registered. With Disqus in our app, using Disqus services I am limited to only using their username and password. In the future I may handle third party logins but have not yes since Disqus does not support this.

  12. This looks great. Nice work Phandroid

  13. Nice, but that icon background has got to go. Would look a million times better with a transparent background and that blue little droid.

  14. New widget got me all happy for sure. And actually don’t FC no more on Jellybean

    1. New update went up tonight… fixes widgets loading issues in case you encountered that bug.

      1. they’re working perfectly now! Awesome!!

  15. Not too happy with the justified text. Varying space width doesn’t read well.

    1. I’m doing an update later tonight…I will see if I can add an option for this ;)

    2. Added a setting just for you ;)

      1. Damn you’re the best!
Many thanks. Use the app all the time.

  16. Thanks for fixing the style’d text crasher bug in some articles; it’s the only FC I’d run into recently.
