Apple Appeals ITC Decision to Delay HTC Product Banning Until April

12

Back in December 2011 Apple won an ITC case against HTC where they sued the Taiwanese smartphone maker for infringing on several of their patents, four to be exact. The courts ruled that only one of those patents were infringed upon by HTC and elected to ban the importation of several devices. The ban wouldn’t be administered until April of this year, however, and Apple is not happy with that.

With the grace period, HTC plans to remove the infringing feature from their phones which they describe as a minor UI experience that could easily be removed via software updates. If they are able to do so before the effective ban date they will be able to avoid that roadblock. With this move it’s clear that Apple’s only intention is to remove any competition they can from the market. [FOSS via The Verge]

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. I would like to know what that minor UI experience is, it will be interesting to see whether HTC meets that deadline

(Note that article doesn’t waste time citing Florian Microsoft of FOSS patents.)

Two other sources of that same story have a quote from Florian.  A harmless one that is pretty obvious.

suit given a stipulation in the two companies’ merger agreement that
requires Google’s consent for “any new action” in court.

    Yeah, well duh.

  3. As if there was any doubt of that (Apple simply wanting competing products off the market).

  4. Chris, I believe the patent in question is the ability to click a phone number on a web page and call that number.  Something so obvious that it should not be patent-able in the first place.

    1. Didn’t Skype start that?

  5. Ph a q Crapple. u suk

  6. Wow Apple just embarrassing. I hope the inventors of the notebook and desktop form factor designers sue Apple. Let them have their own medicine. Crappy company is loosing it’s innovation, licensing fees is soon all that’s left. Crapple the patent troll. Courts should treat Apple if what they are and no longer take them seriously. Oh another Apple law suit, lets turn it down and send them a huge processing bill.

  7. Apple can’t win them all, even though they believe that they can.

  8. Doesn’t all android phones have that click to dial feature?

  9. FUCK U APPLE! Everyone HAVE THE RIGHTS TOO SHOW OFF THEIR PRODUCTS NO MATTER WHAT COUNTRY THEIR IN. you belong in the states NOT IN EUROPE Jack ass

  10. I thought Skype held that patent.
    (Like the guy below/above said).
I remember the update a few years ago with Skype…maybe a search for an old article could find some proof…any who…shouldnt they suit Skype or any other software that does this?

  11. Apple is DELUSIONAL if they think that bcuz other phones are off the shelf that Android lovers will automatically go to them.  All they are doing is making us dislike them even more.  Nobody likes to be forced onto a product.  Make us LIKE you if u want us to buy ur shit.  I had nothing against the iPhone until I started coming to these sights and caught wind of their tactics.
