ARCHOS Android Phone Tablet

8

Yesterday at the announcement of the Android-based ARCHOS 5 Internet Tablet the company left a big ‘ol hook out there with a huge piece of bait that everyone is biting: the ARCHOS Phone Tablet! The phone will sport a 4.3-inch touchscreen, 854×480 resolution and run on a 1GHz processor all in a casing only 10mm thick That’s less than half an inch. HOLY COW!

A compareable device on the market now is the Toshiba TG01 which runs Windows Mobile, but ARCHOS is promising to tie in a whole truckload of multimedia features that could make this an amazingly promising device. While the upcoming ARCHOS 5 Internet Tablet has voice capabilities and a microphone, its only able to make calls using VoIP over Wi-Fi, the ARCHOS Phone Tablet will be available through mobile carriers. At least we hope.

  1. Is that running Android? Doesn’t look like it. It better though otherwise it isn’t important.

  2. Now THIS I would buy.

  3. this is what i call “the beast”

  4. i’d buy it if it wansn’t archos. they are the worst company (customers service wise) i ever dealt with. Took me LITERALLY, 3 months to get a replacement product once for something that died under warranty. And that was only after i called their corporate office and started leaving angry voicemails on random people’s lines.

  5. I’m very interested in the hardware (if running Android) however, I’m a bit concerned about a couple of things.

    1) Amazon now offers it for sale, but implies that the GPS only works with Archos maps. http://www.amazon.com/Archos-500-Internet-Tablet-Android/dp/B002NEGTOC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1253163310&sr=8-3

    2) You have to tether it to your current mobile phone to get data on the fly.

In short, I can deal with the tethering issue as long as T-Mobile doesn’t mind. Other than that and the possible GPS issue (does it have all the cool Android hardware – accelerometer, GPS, compass, angle detector, etc) it sounds like the ideal piece of hardware to me. 1 GHz processor, 500 GB storage, HDMI out, docking station, 5″ display, etc. I’d rather it were a phone, but I’ll take what I can get since no carrier seems to think that US customers deserve a decent phone.

  6. the archos 5 tablet is not the same as the archos phone…its 2 different devices…i have archos products and would luv to get this when it comes out but i worry bout price….archos is known for having high end devices but pricey

  7. i second the above. Archos have an internet tablet that runs Android (already released) and they have an upcoming phone running android (coming). SO do not get the two confused

  8. Anyone knows an approximate or definite release date for the phone? I was about the buy the new Archos 5IT 500GB when I saw this, so my money went straight back into my pocket waiting tentively. Any reply will be appreciated.
