Earlier today, we learned that some Verizon customers were receiving a mysterious Android 4.0.4 update to their Galaxy Nexus without nary a word from Verizon. Well, it didn’t take long for a few modders on on XDA to crack open the update, making a handy update.zip file ready for the flashing. Unfortunately, applying the update this way doesn’t come without a few caveats. First, you will have to be rooted with some kind of custom recovery installed on your device. Second, you’ll have to be running one of the previous official Android 4.0.2 builds — no custom ROMs, no unofficial leaked 4.0.4 builds. If all that checks out, you can get to flashing right away.
Of course, you can always be a good steward, and just wait patiently for the update to get pushed to your device via Verizon’s official channels. Just no telling how long that could take.

So, since you mention we have to be rooted to apply this, does it mean it won’t wipe out my current config? (Currently unlocked and rooted) I haven’t had the chance to try out one of the leaked versions, which I think required resetting your phone and wiping data.
HIt up that XDA link to check, but since it’s just a regular old fashioned update (39MB), a wipe shouldn’t be required.
Rom Toolbox has an option to back up ALL your apps and data. If you pay, you can even restore in the background and you don’t have to manually watch and click “Install” on each app.
Google Voice backs up ALL your text messages, calls, and call logs. Even voice mail.
I think that covers it.I flash ROMs and wipe data all the tym. I don’t worry about having to start over ever. LoL!!
The only thing I can think of is entering your emails and WiFi passwords. And Browser data, since the Browser pretty much changes from ROM to ROM. (ie the Gingerbread browser is different from the ICS browser)
I used to care…..the play store makes it relatively easy too. It saves all of your downloaded apps now. I can generally have my phone back to normal in an hour or two…..
Man, don’t wipe your data. As long as you are stock meaning 4.0.2 you can throw this right on top. If you are on a custom rom and did not back up the 4.0.2 you will have to wipe and loose data…..I happened to apply the 4.0.4 leak and …..well I had to wipe data…..Bummer. But I am about 5 minutes from being on the official release…well a little early…lol
Well… poo…. I tried installing this update and now all my phone does is stay on the boot ani. I can’t even go back into recovery because I just get the red exclamation mark. I guess it’s time to learn ADB. :-P
Verizon. Pffft.
Troll comment that I had to say anyway – does the update make the phone less tablet sized?
That’s why I’m rockin’ ParanoidAndroid on my nexus. ;)
Despite the bugs and some UIs being a bit small, I really like the tablet experience on my phone.
The Google link is returning a 404 page for me.
There is a download link on Droid-life….Sorry Chris we are all friends. =)
Yawn. I’ll stick to liquid 1.35 and see what they do with this update in the near future ;)
Anyone seen a Verizon OTA update work without a SIM card? I’m using a Galaxy Nexus as a test phone with no service. They’ve always come down just fine for non-serviced Verizon devices without LTE, but I’m curious if the same can be said for the LTE items with SIM cards.
I’m going to stay on liquid, Verizon is a bit late to the party
The download link is returning Error 404 Not Found! The zip file must have been removed.
AOKP has had this baked into their glorious Rom for a long long time now. that should have been an article here as well. oh well.
True but this will take into account Verizon and device specific fixes that AOSP has not. That been said it won’t be long until CM9 and others incorporate the fixes in their own way.
Blah blah blah

Couldn’t wait for the stock ICS ROM any longer so I put Ice Cold Sandwich on my Incredible S yesterday. This was my first exposure to Android 4 and I’m an instant fan. Worth the upgrade just on intuitive improvements alone.
So if you can’t wait for stock ROM I think the custom ones are all fairly stable now.
Crazy how I’m still on 4.0.2. on my GSM version. But I’ll wait…smh
Blah blah blah……..androidpithecus turdsandwicherensis
