The folks at Corning have just announced that they will be bringing a sequel (yes glass can have sequels) to their Corning Gorilla Glass product with Corning Gorilla Glass 2. Set to be in phones later this year, Corning Gorilla Glass 2 will have improvements that will help users protect their displays from damage better than ever. We weren’t given the clearest of clues as to what they have done in this sequel but they’ll be issuing another issue on the 9th, just a day before CES kicks off. (NYSE: GLW) today announced its plans for the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas next week. The Corning booth, #12642 Central Hall, will showcase the critical role of highly engineered specialty glass in addressing emerging trends highlighted at CES 2012, including: increased functionality from smaller form factors; touch technology; connected devices in new application spaces; and sleek, durable large-format design aesthetics.
A key feature of Corning’s CES exposure will be the introduction of Corning® Gorilla® Glass 2, the next generation of the popular, damage-resistant cover glass for consumer electronic devices.
“Corning Gorilla Glass has been a tremendous success for Corning, enjoying excellent market acceptance across mobile device industries. Handset and tablet device manufacturers are clearly driving toward higher functionality from thinner designs. An 82-inch advanced multi-touch LCD display prototype featuring Corning Gorilla Glass as a durable, touch-sensitive, and elegant cover glass.

Hope they demo dropping an iPhone 4 on the ground and showing it shatter….then drop a phone with there new glass on it and have it come out of the fall perfectly fine!

The I-phone is one of the best phones on the market and the only reason people hate them is because of the fan boys. Android phones are not indestructible…i dropped my evo 3d once and the whole entire screen was cracked.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t believe the Evo 3D has Gorilla glass on it. Quite a few HTC phones in the past have gone without it. Either way, even Gorilla glass isn’t indestructible, some pieces come out with micro defects and such that make it less tough than other pieces. That’s a given with glass.
I’m correcting you, evo3d does have gorillas glass. Go on their site and see it on the list plus its in the description either on the sprint site or the htc site. But either way, just because a phone has gglass doesn’t mean it can’t break. But it does mean in most cases you can go without a screen protector which i have since the 3d came out and only scratch on it was because of my son dropping it and scraping wall on the way down. Its amazing all it got was 1 scratch that you can barely see.
I’m a cellular salesman by trade, and I live in Corning where Gorilla Glass is made, so I know quite a bit about the glass – no disrespect to you, sir. I just wasn’t certain about the Evo3d specifically. I do thank you for correcting my error.
Either way, Gorilla Glass is awesome. A customer once knocked my Droid x 5 feet face down onto concrete as I was demoing it to them, without any damage having been done to the phone.

Yeah I broke mine 4 days after I had it. I threw it down trying to prove a point and afterwards remembered that it doesn’t have gorilla glass, it has something else…
i did that last night. one of my friends was talking about getting an iphone. so i threw my phone showed him no damage. i said try that with an iphone. point was proven.
Hope this means it will be able to stop bullets. For those of us that live in da hood O_o

I’m pretty sure the galaxy nexus doesn’t have corning gorilla glass. But I hope gorilla 2 erases the need for screen protectors :)

I have an SGS and the gorilla glass is good, but not that good. I have the phone for more than a year now, and it was pretty ok for a while, but in November I must have done something wrong, because the glass has been scratched right at the middle of the screen. You cant see it unless you view the phone from an angle. It’s not important how tough they say it is, a screen protector it’s still a must, the rest is marketing. Lesson learned!!
I think that even if the screen has been scratched, the gorilla glass is a good concept and hopefully they will make things only better.
