Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 Chips Look to Amaze Consumers in 2012

10

Qualcomm has announced the next generation in Snapdragon – the S4 series of SoCs that are set to be in phones and tablets starting in 2012. This new chipset brings the manufacturing process from 45nm to 28nm resulting in a more power efficient chipset that is low on heat and physical real estate.

They’re calling the CPU inside Krait which boasts a new architecture that’ll net them 60% gains in performance over the current S3 chipsets. Clock speeds can go from 1.5GHz to 2.5GHz. While we’re not sure we’ll ever see this thing maxed out inside of a phone or a tablet, we’re glad to hear that the potential to unlock those clock speeds are there.

Alongside the CPU we’re getting an Adreno 225 GPU. To put that into perspective, the Adreno 220 is already said to provide graphical power that rivals last generation’s consoles. This one is a bit of a step forward and it’s said to provide 50% more power than the 220.

The chipset combines all major spectrum frequencies for use around the world, meaning HTC, Samsung, Motorola and what have you won’t have to use different chipsets, making it all that more streamlined, faster and easier for carriers and OEMs to build their phones.

We won’t go too much further into the deets but be sure to find them over at Qualcomm’s site in .PDF form. Manufacturers are said to already be sampling this one. [PhoneScoop]

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. They better be amazing, for HTC’s sake.

    1. dude they are amazing.

  2. Hmm. I wonder if those OEMs working on tablet docks or laptop docks will ever be able to configure their devices so the processor speed increases when it’s docked.

  3. Do the chipsets support 450MHZ frequencies?

  4. We don’t need more ghz, we need smartphones that last more then 1 day…

    1. “more power efficient chipset” …. root your phone + setCPU, mine lasts 3 days

  5. 28nm tech is going to save a lot on heat and battery life. They really need to bump these to 2.0-2.5 or anywhere in between. id be thrilled with a 2.5ghz 28nm dual core!

As in most instances, some dual core outperform a lot of quad cores in most instances since most platforms are still stuck supporting dual core only models. CPU benchmark scores make use of quadcore, but most apps wont

  6. Samsung doesnt need this. They have their own chips coming up and I will bet that their chip will be far superior than this

  7. Wow.. Soon my phone will be more than powerful than my desk top!
