The folks at Vlingo have taken to the Android market with version 3.0 of their voice command application. Vlingo was already great, especially for being a free application, and the experience is about to get any better. Alongside a brand new user interface which is quite the piece of eye-candy, they’ve added more languages so that more people around the world can join in on the voice controlling fun. Check below for a full changelog:
- expanded language support for French, Italian, German, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese (beta), & Korean(beta) users
- a brand new, simpler user interface making it easier for Vlingo users to discover the features that are most useful to them.
- a refreshed graphic design, simplified landing screens and guided user instructions

The reason why I use Vlingo…Bluetooth.
You can set your bluetooth headset button to launch Vlingo and Vlingo actually uses the headsets mic for voice input…two things that Google Voice fails to do.
I use Vlingo for everything. Much better than Google voice imo.
It’s not hands free if you have to keep touching the phone UI to launch the features! I don’t see how they can claim “completely hands free” when one has to select your action (e.g., text, or call) on the screen, then the “go” button, then touch the “mic” button on the screen and then the “send” button on your screen.
Of course one button touch has to be initiated. It can’t listen for commands 24/7, otherwise your phone will be doing all sorts of things. And the in-car portion of the app is hands-free after initially starting it up.

If you set your options to make it go into Car Mode as soon you plug in your phone, a little red mic looking icon pops in the right side of the Vlingo screen (it’s in the 1:20 mark).
Once you see the red mic just say “Hey Vlingo” and it will ask you what you want to do.
I wish it would let you specify the voice command that would activate this! It would make for some amusing phone interactions since they already allow you to specify what it says in response to the ‘wake’ voice command. lol
