Oh, would you look at that: it’s June 16th. I recall something big was supposed to go down today. Hmm… wonder what that cou– oh, that’s right, Verizon’s big LTE expansion goes down today. In fact, it went down a couple of days ago for some of you as Verizon has been testing the waters and elected to just leave some of those towers on (in south-eastern Wisconsin, anyway).
Verizon lit up 19 new major markets and their surrounding entities today, meaning a bunch of you have just gotten that lightning fast mobile data speed on your 4G phones, MiFis and data sticks. Two new markets were expanded, Detroit and San Francisco, alongside the following additions:
- Milwaukee, WI (woot!); Racine, WI; Madison, WI; Wisconsin Dells, WI; Kenosha, WI; Mequon, WI; More Southeastern Wisconsin cities here. (There are a ton.)
- Salt Lake City, UT
- Boise, ID
- Fresno, CA; San Francisco Bay area (expansion), CA; Sacramento, CA
- Spokane, WA
- Grand Rapis, MI; Flint, MI; Ann Arbor, MI; Lansing, MI
- Hartford, CT
- Indianapolis, IN; Fort Wayne, IN
- State College, PA; Harrisburg, PA; Erie, PA
- Springfield, OH; Dayton, OH
- Greenville-Spartanburg, SC
Like I said, a whole lot of you folks. This bring’s Verizon’s 4G market count to 74, just shy of Sprint’s 77. And Sprint has had a hell of a head start, we’d say. Verizon originally planned to get their 4G LTE to their entire coverage area by the end of 2013, and we’d say they’re on pace to do just that.
They’ve met every goal they set when they first announced their 4G network, delivering LTE speeds to markets precisely when they said they would. All of these cities were on the list for a Q2 launch and, well, Q2 doesn’t end for another two weeks.
I hope Verizon keeps the pace up, but I have a feeling we don’t have anything to worry about. Now, excuse me while I go to Lake Michigan and use Verizon’s newfound 4G network in Milwaukee as an excuse to work in the sun.
I’m usually not the correcting type of commenter, but Greenville-Spartanburg is SC, not NC.
I was just at the brewers game on Sunday and was wondering when Milwaukee would be getting that sweet network nectar.
Was there, GREAT GAME! 1st place.
The entire city is in a joyous mood today because of it. Or is it the LTE network? It’s been up since Tuesday for me.
Same with the LTE here in Madison.
Enjoy it while it lasts:D
Reds owned you last year and we own you this year:D
Flint was live yesterday.
how is Rochester, MN always behind… home of IBM and Mayo Clinic… i don’t get it
Still no Triad area of N.C. (Greensboro, High Point, Winston-Salem). Sadface.
salt lake isnt up yet.
Why does every person in Wisconsin get their own 4G network?
Easier to get tower permits there than in major cities.
Most of those cities are Milwaukee Suburbs. They should really just say Madison and Milwaukee areas.
each person is actually walking around with a tower on their head… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fe2vZ49QpY8
On other news, Xoom still does not have that LTE update.
And is still significantly overpriced with a low quality screen and no SD card support
How is it Rochester and NYC are the only cities in NY to get LTE, where’s the lovin’ for Syracuse, Albany and Buffalo!?
Although not official, ALbany has LTE. At least everytime I am there.
Exactly. Unofficially, VZW probably has LTE in over 100 markets.
Any idea how far the coverage spreads from the city proper – for those of us in the burbs?
Not sure how far coverage actually extends, but I know Verizon does a good job of getting the suburbs surrounding major market announcements. Just look at the specific press release for a big city near you. They list smaller surrounding markets more often than not.
Check out http://www.vzw.com/coverage and select 4G. The maps are all updated as of today.
Got my Verizon notification yesterday via email. Only problem is Verizon has 3 shitty phones for this service which specs are mediacore and I would only phandom using them as hotspots for my tablets. Crappy phones that they try to sell you at a premium because they have LTE.
ha crappy phones? What because the don’t have dual core?
They have 3 now? I thought they still only had 1 crappy phone being the HTC thunderbolt.
The Droid Charge is epic. I’m getting one soon. By the time a dual core 4g smartphone is out, unlimited 4g will be gone.
THANK YOU! Whew, somebody had to say it…I can’t believe I signed that silly unlimited contract just to get 20+ down and 6-10 upload for the price of 3G speeds, what was I thinking! [Droid Charge ftw btw]
Ive had it since monday here in harrisburg pa
This morning I received an email from Verizon stating “4G LTE Available in your area”. Since NJ isn’t scheduled to see LTE before 2012 (at the earliest) I wonder where they think I live. Maybe at Newark Airport.
Just so you know a good deal of NJ has 4g. I work in Morristown which recently got it. So they currently have it from the east coast of NJ by nyc all the way to there. Plus if you drive down the turnpike I keep a 4g signal from the nyc area to around the new Brunswick area. Also I know when I drive back south I pick it up in the deptford area. So I would say they got a good part of NJ.
I have had 4g in greenville sc since early monday morning even managed to get 41mbs down and 19.72 mbs upload using speedtest.net from my HTC Thunderbolt.
Uh…Sacramento already has it? C’mon give us some California Central Valley lovin’
Yay for Greater Sacramento, now patiently waiting for Droid Bionic… :)
Lansing and East Lansing, MI went live at 4:50 PM yesterday evening. Oh happy days! Just got 26 Mb/sec down and 7 Mb/sec up in a speed test.
Springfield ohio? Why not cincy, im on sprint n i understand dayton, ohio its a big little city, lots of heroin n inexpensive drugs
Cincinnati already has it
