We could be seeing a “Google Flight” app headed to the Android market soon as the search giant has announced that their acquisition of ITA Software – organizers of airline data – has closed. The U.S. Department of Justice finally approved the deal last Friday after nearly a year of antitrust trials. (This is what T-Mobile and AT&T have to go through, in case you didn’t know.) Now that it’s closed, Google will begin integrating their team into the Google Plex to begin work on “exciting new flight search tools for all our users.” Read those last three words carefully – surely a flight application for Android will come of this. Google Flight doesn’t sound like a bad name at all. [via Google]

I doubt we’ll see a Google Flight (or whatever they call it) app from this merger. Not all Google products end up with Android apps – look at Google Docs, loads more deserving, and yet, nowhere to be found. Google News took forever to get its own app, as did Blogger and Orkut, and both of those are half-assed at best. Blogger is post-only, with no options or capabilities for reading or networking, and who uses Orkut?
While I’d love to see more Google apps for Google products, I have to hope Google wouldn’t waste resources on something like a flight app when they’re missing the boat on so many others that would see much more use and have the need…

Don’t the airlines already have their own websites/apps that tell you the status of your flight?
Probably, but I’d rather get all my information from one place, regardless of airline.
Yep, so does Amtrak and VIA Rail.
If we see a Google flight app before a Google docs app, I will cut myself.
