This one’s being tagged as a rumor, but it’s not a shocker. (Nor is it farfetch’d by any stretch of the imagination.) The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google, MasterCard, and CitiGroup have all teamed up to bring widespread mobile payment systems to consumers in America.
The initiative doesn’t surprise us after Google reiterated their interest in near field communication with the release of the Nexus S. One thing that does surprise me is who they’ve chosen to do business with.
I would have thought teaming up with Isis – who is working with Discover on a similar initiative – would have been the better choice. If you don’t know, AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile have all jumped on the Isis bandwagon late last year. In any case, I’m glad to see one of the market’s biggest technology firms jump into the fold and help bring to America what many others are already enjoying the world over.
now if we just could get citi to do an android app…
