ARM in conjunction with IBM have announced a partnership that’ll see the two working together going forward to create low-power semiconductor chips for ARM’s latest mobile chipsets. In their endeavors, ARM will continue to improve the architecture they’ve provided for so long while IBM helps them keep power consumption at an industry low with 14 nm process die coming into the mix.
In these efforts, we should see ARM-based chips getting even more efficient and faster while going easy on the battery technology that doesn’t seem to be improving any time soon. Specifics weren’t mentioned, but we expect some of the developments to come out of this partnership will eventually make their way into Android phones and tablets.
“ARM’s Cortex processors have become the leadership platform for the majority of smart phones and many other emerging mobile devices,” said Michael Cadigan, general manager, IBM Microelectronics. “We plan to continue working closely with ARM and our foundry customers to speed the momentum of ARM technology by delivering highly advanced, low-power semiconductor technology for a variety of new communications and computing devices”
We hope once the legwork has been done, the likes of Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, and NVIDIA will adopt them or – at the least – mimic them for next-generation chipsets so that we don’t run into the problem of sacrificing battery life for unmatched performance. [via Cellular-News]
