US Cellular could be acquired by T-Mobile and Verizon

US Cellular might not be as big as the major US carriers, but they have their fair share of customers. But now it looks there is a chance that the carrier market in the US is about to get smaller. According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, it seems that US Cellular could be acquired by T-Mobile and Verizon.

But wait, why two different carriers? It turns out that due to potential antitrust concerns, both T-Mobile and Verizon have sort of agreed to acquire US Cellular’s assets separately. The publication’s source claims that negotiations with T-Mobile are almost complete and that they will acquire a huge chunk of US Cellular’s assets for around $2 billion.

As for Verizon, the report claims that negotiations have stalled. It is unclear if the talks have fallen through but for now, things aren’t moving. The sale of US Cellular’s assets includes its operations and spectrum licenses. The carrier’s cell towers, on the other hand, will be sold separately, all 4,000 of them.

US Cellular has been around for a very long time and we’re sure that if this report is accurate, many of its customers will be sad to see it go. Until then, do take it with a grain of salt and hopefully we’ll have some kind of official confirmation soon.
