Unlocking the bootloader on ASUS Zenfones will no longer be possible

0

In the past when Android was still relatively new, it wasn’t the perfect operating system, but it had one thing going for it – customization. Users who had the know how could unlock the bootloader of their phones and root their devices, allowing them to install custom ROMs and apps that might not have been possible.

Unfortunately for ASUS users, it looks like that door will be closed in the future. This is according to a post on the ASUS forums in which one user claims that a customer rep told them that unlocking the bootloaders on Zenfones will no longer be possible for both the Zenfone 9 and 10 models, as well as future devices.

Naturally users are upset because it seems that prior to this, ASUS had actually said that they would enable unlocking this year, but if this response from the customer rep is accurate, ASUS has seemingly walked back on their word. Some are even threatening that they will return their devices if this is indeed the case.

That being said and in all fairness, Android has come a long way since the early days and OEMs have also toned down the modifications they’ve made to the OS, meaning that users can already get a lot done on their phones without necessarily having to root it. We suppose having the option would be nice, but if you’re not too fussed about custom ROMs and apps then it might not be that big of a deal to you.
