While Samsung’s intentions to keep the Galaxy Tab up to date haven’t really been a secret, we are getting more confirmation out of the slate’s launch in India on the matter. A Samsung representative said that, barring any hardware setbacks, the tablet should see both the Gingerbread and Honeycomb versions of Android when they eventually come to market. When that will be isn’t quite clear, but it seems like Google may be setting up a 1-2 punch similar to the release of Android 2.0 and 2.1 in quick succession.
Gingerbread is rumored to make its debut before christmas, and we should expect news on Honeycomb to come early in 2011. When both launch and when they make it to the Galaxy Tab is a different story entirely. Just take the Samsung Galaxy S as an example, which still awaits its date with Froyo months after the new OS was first unveiled.

As cool as the Tab is, I’d be hard pressed to buy one after owning a Galaxy & waiting so long on Froyo. I’m seriously considering a new color Nook instead. It’s MUCH cheaper & I guess that it’ll be merely hours before a hacked ROM for it hits. Yeah, it may not have the hardware that the Tab does, but at 1/3 the price, it’s at least something to play with.
well duh. Samsung has learned their lesson and is now partnering up with Google for the awesome new Google Phone. Samsung Hardware and Google software and fast updates! Can’t wait! Good days ahead of Sammy.
I do not think it will take that long. Their phones have a major obstacle holding them back- a deeply integrated touchwiz ui which the tab does not have. They went from full blown touchwiz on the original galaxy s, vibrant, and captivate, to half way on the epic. Now they are straying even farther away… wise decision.
If Samsung skips Gingerbread and goes to stock Honeycomb in the 1st quarter of next year then it will be game over for other tablets. If not then expect Honeycomb in 3rd quarter 2011, you know I’m speaking the truth.
Samsung does not have a great track record with promised updates, ask Behold owners. Btw, do the Galxy phones have Froyo yet? Isn’t gingerbread imminent? when are the Galaxy phones getting it?
According to earlier posts on another blog, the Galaxy Tab will definitely not be getting Honeycomb. That version of Android is supposed to be so different from Froyo and Gingerbread, as far as tablets are concerned, that it just won’t run on the Tab.
My wallet is waiting for official confirmation from Samsung if the Galaxy Tab will be getting update to Gingerbread and Honeycomb.
Once there’s such confirmation, I certainly will get one, otherwise I will buy IPAD (based on experience by using iPhone, can always update the firmware to the latest).
Most probably, current tab owners will never be able to upgrade to the latest Android version unless they hack it or is it Rom-ing? The reason? Samsung is a business. And like any business, it sole purpose is to sell and make huge profits, no matter what they tell you. So, the more they allow you to upgrade the firmware, the later time for you to buy their new gadget.
So, new gadget + new firmware = more money for the company.
Time to learn how to hack my Galaxy Tab.
I already own the Galaxy Tab. I am very happy with it because of its portability and it has everything I need and want in a tablet. Unfortunately there are some apps and sites which are not exactly that compatible with it. I have been seeing that Gingerbread or honeycombe are better operating systems which could solve this small setback. Is there a way to upgrade an existing unit (using Froyo) to use either of these OS’s? If so, how do I go about it? Need help please. Thanks.
I also own a tab & I’ve just spoken to Samsung about upgrading the tab to Gingerbread or Honeycomb & they confirmed that we will be able to upgrade in the near future.
My guess would be that it will be when they release the new 10.1 tab or soon after.
