Google I/O 2021 is set to kick off next week, where we’re expecting to see the Pixel 5a launch, but many Pixel fans are already looking to the Fall. That’s when the Pixel 6 is slated to launch, and according to Jon Prosser with Front Page Tech, it’s going to have a radical redesign. Part of the reason why many don’t care all that much about the Pixel 5a is that the phone is really nothing more than a Pixel 5 XL with another mid-range processor.
But in today’s edition of FPT, Prosser shared some interesting created renders of the Pixel 6. For a few years now, Pixel fans have been hoping for some improved camera hardware as the Pixel 5 is continuing to use the same camera from the past few years. And while the Pixel 5 is still a formidable opponent thanks to its image processing, it’s clear that Apple, Samsung, and others have caught up to, or surpassed Google’s camera hardware.
According to Prosser, these renders were created based on real-life images of the Pixel 6. So let’s get into what’s to come. Oh, and there will actually going to be two different devices in the lineup with the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The Pixel 6 appears to ditch the selfie camera in the top left corner, opting instead for a centered hole punch for your selfie cameras.
As for the rear cameras, the Pixel 6 will sport two rear-mounted cameras, along with an LED flash. The Pixel 6 Pro bumps up to three total cameras on the back, in addition to the same LED flash. But what’s interesting here is the actual design of the camera….bar? Google could be shaking things up and going all out with an all-new design to accompany the company’s first in-house processor called ‘Whitechapel’.
While Prosser wasn’t sure as to what the camera sensors will be used, it’s easy to assume that Google most definitely is upgrading the primary module to a larger sensor. This is the trend that we’ve been seeing from other phone makers, along with rumors that Huawei’s P50 series could sport a one-inch sensor.
Something that you might have noticed missing from these renders is the lack of a fingerprint scanner. However, that’s because it seems that Google will be adopting an in-display fingerprint scanner. It wouldn’t surprise us if Google uses Qualcomm’s 2nd-gen ultrasonic scanner, the same one found in the Galaxy S21, but we’re not going to be all of our eggs in that basket if Google’s coming out with its own chipset.
As always, we recommend taking these rumors with a grain of salt. Prosser and FPT have a good track record when it comes to Apple leaks, but the same can’t be said about the Android world. The last big “leak” was that Google was going to cancel the Pixel 5a altogether. But that was promptly refuted by Google, instead stating that the device would be coming to the US and Japan later this year. But if it’s any consolation for the FPT fans out there, Max Weinbach of Android Police states that he has independently confirmed that these renders are accurate.

If these renders are in fact real, and this is what the Pixel 6 is going to look like, then the smartphone market is in for quite a spin this Fall.
