The Pixel 4’s data transfer rates over USB are ridiculously slow

Whenever a company releases a new product like a smartphone, generally you would expect it to be an improvement over its predecessor where it will offer up more impressive performance gains. Oddly enough, despite the Pixel 4 being the latest that Google has to offer, it seems to lag behind when it comes to data transfer rates.

This is based on a test conducted by Android Authority in which they discovered that the Pixel 4 seems to have the slowest data transfer rates over USB compared to most of the other Pixel phones, even though it is supposed to be the newest.

As you can see in the image above, the Pixel 4 takes about 84 seconds to read a file over USB, and about 125 seconds to write a file over USB. Even older devices like the original Pixel and Pixel 2 seem to fare much better, save for the Pixel 3 which is actually slower. Taking a look at non-Pixel phones, it certainly puts the Pixel 4 to shame.

That being said, there is a chance that this could be fixed. Android Authority has speculated that the reason for the slow speeds is due to Google’s implementation of the Media Transfer Protocol. Perhaps with some changes to software, things could improve, but we’re not sure if Google is aware of this or if they plan on fixing or improving it in the future.
