Android 8.0 Oreo is official

0

We got our first glimpse of Android O back in March when the first developer preview was released. At first, we didn’t know what version number it would be. We eventually found out it would be 8.0. But that still left the nickname, which has long been an Android tradition. Last week, Oreo was seemingly “confirmed” by a Googler, but today we can put the rumors to rest.

As many predicted, Oreo is indeed the nickname. Google hasn’t done a branded version nickname since Android 4.4 KitKat, but Oreo just made so much sense for Android O. There are a few other desserts, such as oatmeal cookie and orange sherbet, but Oreo is undoubtedly the most popular. The statue (seen above) is the Android robot in an Oreo superhero costume because Android 8.0 has a lot of safety features.

Android Oreo is available today on AOSP and if you’re running the Android Beta program. Pixel and Nexus devices will have to wait a little longer.

So what do you think of the name? Did you predict it correctly?

Ever since I flipped open my first phone I've been obsessed with the devices. I've dabbled in other platforms, but Android is where I feel most at home.

Reminder: The Android O event is being streamed live at 2:40PM Eastern
