Our excitement for the future of self-driving cars already reached fever pitch at the mere thought of the technology, so when we heard of Tesla’s unique take on it we went nuts. Earlier this year, they talked about a summon feature in their app that would let you retrieve your car no matter where you are.
Simply tap a button in the app, and Tesla says that the car would find its way to you no matter where you are in the world. Of course, that’s a bit of a stretch considering a few things:
- It would have to find a path where self-driving cars are regulated for use. The goal, of course, is to get them drivable anywhere a human-operated car can drive today.
- It would have to take a pit stop at some point for gas if we’re talking cross country.
- Good luck getting this thing across an ocean.
Despite the fairy tale falling a bit short, the mere thought of being able to play Knight Rider or Batman and have your car delivered to you like you have your own personal valet is, quite simply, awesome. In the meantime, we’re just waiting for these cars to become commercially available, and with Tesla saying that all of the cars currently being developed are equipped with self-driving technology, we’re hopeful that won’t take long. Get a look at an early preview of this feature in action above, and look below for how we’re hoping it’ll really feel like once we’re able to do it ourselves.
