Xiaomi Mi 5 in metal unibody form factor turns up in newly-leaked photos

0

The Xiaomi Mi 5 just can’t stay out of the spotlight. The device has leaked yet again in another series of leaked photos. This time we get a look at what may be a metal unibody variant of the phone, something we hadn’t expected as previous leaks suggested we were only getting black, white and pink models.

There are a couple of reasons to be wary of this being an inaccurate leak. For starters, the camera on the rear is not flanked by a dual-tone flash on the right as we’ve seen in previous renders. It does rest on the upper-left corner of the device, but its flash unit seems to be below it, and the size of the hole suggests it may only be a single-tone LED flash.

You’ll also notice that the chassis in the photo is hollow, which in itself doesn’t tell us much but could suggest this is either an old prototype design or a fake altogether. For what it’s worth, new reports this weekend did suggest Xiaomi is preparing a metallic premium version of the Xiaomi Mi 5,  so it’s possible the design was simply tweaked for this particular variant. Here are the full slate of variants we’re said to be seeing from Xiaomi once it’s all said and done:

  • Mi 5 featuring metallic design with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage carries a price tag of 2199 Yuan ($335).
  • Mi 5 featuring metallic design with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage carries a price tag of 2599 Yuan ($396).
  • Mi 5 featuring glass design with 2.5D curved glass 2K display with 4GB RAM and 32GB internal storage carries a price tag of 2799 Yuan ($426).
  • Mi 5 featuring glass design with 2.5D curve glass 2K display with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage carries a price tag of 3099 Yuan ($472).

It might seem strange at first that the metallic phones are cheaper, but the glass models’ 2.5D 2K displays are likely to be the main reason for the price discrepancies. Xiaomi will have a lot of nice options for users if these rumors hold true, but we’ll have to wait for the official unveiling (said to happen February 24th) before we know how, exactly, we’re feeling.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.
