New information about the supposed 2016 Moto X seems to flow in daily. After seeing its original enclosure (potentially metal) and even a look at its internal chassis, word is now spreading that Motorola’s 2016 flagship will have a fingerprint scanner. Motorola was the first Android OEM to put a fingerprint scanner into a smartphone (pictured on the Motorola Atrix below), but they haven’t been hasty to return to those roots.
While rumors are rumors, we’d say it’s one worth putting a gamble on. There are a few different reasons why a fingerprint scanner on the Moto X 2016 makes total sense:
- Motorola was already toying around with the idea for the Nexus 6, but decided to scrap it at the last minute. They clearly want to support the technology.
- There’s an official API for it as of Android 6.0 Marshmallow. We reckon Motorola didn’t rush to include a fingerprint scanner in earlier phones because they would have had to create their own custom framework for it, something they want to shy away from as they look to use Android mostly as Google delivers it.
- It’s just smart business. Android Pay is taking off, and all their competitors are starting to include it as a standard feature on their handsets. You don’t want to be the only company with a phone that doesn’t have a fingerprint scanner in 2016.
Of course, just because it makes sense on paper doesn’t mean this rumor is any more than a rumor, so we’ll still opt to take it with a grain of salt.
