What happens when the NFL’s most accomplished quarterback — the New England Patriots’ Tom Brady — replaces his Samsung phone with an iPhone 6? He gets suspended for 4 games.
Brady’s phone was a primary subject of a shaky controversy and investigation, if you haven’t heard. The New England Patriots were caught using footballs under the required minimum inflation level during their AFC championship game against the Indianapolis Colts, prompting a scandal dubbed DeflateGate. Footballs with lower psi pressure would make them easier to grip and throw, something that could give a team a big edge, especially in cold weather conditions.
The Patriots went on to win the Superbowl. Tom Brady’s role in all this? He was accused of being involved in the purposeful alteration of the equipment, and supposedly, his phone had the damning evidence.
The league must have felt similarly, upholding the 4 game suspension, to which Brady himself responded on Facebook:
I also disagree with yesterdays narrative surrounding my cellphone. I replaced my broken Samsung phone with a new iPhone 6 AFTER my attorneys made it clear to the NFL that my actual phone device would not be subjected to investigation under ANY circumstances. As a member of a union, I was under no obligation to set a new precedent going forward, nor was I made aware at any time during Mr. Wells investigation, that failing to subject my cell phone to investigation would result in ANY discipline.
The lesson learned in all this? It really doesn’t look good when your smartphone breaks during the course of an investigation where your smartphone is going to be a major source of evidence. It also doesn’t look good when your corporate sponsor markets a product called “FlexBall” during an investigation about, well, you get the idea…
Maybe, had Brady upgraded his Samsung phone to one of the Best Android Phones, he wouldn’t have this problem. Or at least not be facing this scrutiny.
It seems crazy that Tom Brady switched from Android to iPhone when we all know he’ll do anything for an Edge.
I bet he originally bought the iPhone 6 Plus but secretly swapped it for an iPhone 6 so he could hold it better.
