Samsung Gear Live: specs, hands-on video and pictures, and info you need to know

11

Earlier today Google took a quick second to announce the Samsung Gear Live, one of the first Android Wear smartwatches we’ll be seeing. Wondering what’s under the hood? Here’s a full spec sheet with everything you can expect:

  • 1.63-inch Super AMOLED display (320 x 320)
  • 1.2GHz processor
  • Bluetooth 4.0 LE
  • IP67 water and dust resistant
  • 512MB of RAM
  • 4GB of internal storage
  • 300mAh li-ion battery
  • 59g, 37.9 x 56.4 x 8.9 mm
  • Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Compass, Heart Rate sensor
  • Available in Black and Wine Red

Samsung didn’t have much else to say about the device, though that’s because Google already did all the talking about its software platform and features. This is standard, untouched and unscrubbed Android Wear (which you can read all about right here).

Our hands-on time with the Gear Live revealed a smartwatch that wasn’t really amazing, but felt and looked solid. One immediate thing we noticed was the lack of camera was the lack of a camera (which only looked weird because we’re so used to seeing one on the original Samsung Galaxy Gear and the Samsung Gear 2). It’s a bit refreshing to see a Samsung device that isn’t aiming to shove more sensors onto the thing than can barely fit.

Unfortunately the software on the demo unit we handled wasn’t yet available and we were treated to nothing but a repeating demo reel, but it did give us a pretty good idea of how life with a Gear Live on your wrist would be once you receive one in the near future.

The smartwatch is supposed to be going live alongside the LG G Watch in the Google Play Store later today so stay tuned as we wait for them to touch down. In the meantime be sure to check our hands-on video up above (and you’ll have to excuse Rob repeatedly calling it the Galaxy Gear Live — I guess he’s gotten so used to Samsung’s strong branding by now).

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. OOOO….I think….I want this hmmm

  2. Cool watch. Looks enormous when he put it on though, hmm.

  3. That Super AMOLED display makes this very enticing!

  4. Would be awesome if you you pay a $50 fee and have the gear 1 or 2 updated to android wear

    1. Or you can do the job yourself w/ a root?

      1. I was thinking that too, wonder if that’s possible with the gear. I would do it in a heartbeat.

        1. I think there is this rom called null rom, so I believe a root is possible. Now, the source code for Android Wear from this is needed. Give it about 30-90 days for a successful port on XDA.

          1. You are correct, the original Galaxy Gear has the _null rom and it turns the watch into a full Android device. It comes with a custom kernel that unlocks/restores the OEM fequency clocks from the factory locked 800MHz single core to the 1.6GHz dual core processor it really has. Google Playstore is working on it and you can install games and apps, this is in addition to the built in ones it comes with stock. I even have videos on Youtube of emulators running on it, you can play Super Nintendo, Genesis, Playstation, Dreamcast, etc. All I have to say is Samsung ruined the watch with their Tizen OS….. wondering how their new watch will do…..

  5. Dear Phandroid – I have 2 words for you: ‘Macro Mode’. Please start using it. Take a good long look at your cameras, find that little switch, turn it on….profit. The More You Know ™.

    1. I have 2 more words: White Balance. The white balance in these is horrible. WTF?

  6. ha ha I’m so tempted to purchase this just because it’s going live soon. Yet after watching the Moto 360 hands on I may end up regretting that mistake.
