Will a Nexus 10 refresh come from ASUS, not Samsung?

42

A refresh of last year’s Nexus 10 seems like a no-brainer, even if the tablet didn’t rise to the same level of popularity as its smaller, cheaper counterpart the Nexus 7. But when we see the new 10-inch slate, supposedly launching in time for the holidays, it might not be coming from Samsung’s camp. The latest rumor says Google is going with ASUS, the company they partnered with on the Nexus 7.

The switch wouldn’t be all that surprising. Samsung’s offering was pitched as a higher-end device, not a 10-inch rehash of the budget built Nexus 7. While Google will likely still want their Nexus 10 to come across as a premium slate, ASUS knows how to build it for as cheap as possible. While there is no replacement for a hi-res display or powerful processing, price is as important a factor in the tablet buying decision for many.

But you have to wonder if there are other reasons Google and Samsung did not renew the lease on the Nexus 10. Perhaps Samsung bowed out, too focused on their own Galaxy line. Maybe the two couldn’t reach an agreeable deal. Whatever the case, look for an ASUS-made Nexus 10 to touchdown later this year on the Google Play Store and at retail outlets such as Best Buy.

  1. Considering my experience with the latest N7, I kinda hope not.

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2381123

    1. Bad experience with the new nexus 7?

      1. Yes. Either I have terrible luck, or the touch screen problems are pretty wide spread.

I am actually convinced that many people have the issue but just chalk up the issue to “Android being laggy”. It’s disappointing because otherwise I really love the new N7.

    2. RMA it/ return it?

      1. Did you read the link? I did. 3 times. The problem is very wide spread.

        1. That stinks, bud. I tend to have very good luck with all of my electronics. Needless to say, I haven’t experienced the same as you. However, after three attempts and it still hasn’t been fixed – probably time to hang up the cleats.

  2. Very true not that I think about it. i mean these were no issues with the original Nexus 7 but the same could be said for the Nexus 10 which I almost picked up recently but now knowing that a possible refresh is in the works I can wait. Then if the new Nexus 10 is the wonner I can grab the newest tablet on the market and if it ends up being a dud or Asus makes it and messes it up I’ll bet I can find a discounted OG Nexus 10…may be old but still an amazing tablet and once you root it the sky’s the limit.

    1. i dont know why asus would mess it up…i mean i love my og n7 runnin flawless with a lil paranoidandroid

  3. http://phandroid.com/2013/07/25/samsung-new-nexus-10/

I hope it’s another Samsung, since we have a rumor each way, it still seems just as likely.

  4. So the title asks, “Will They?” But at the end you say it with certainty, “Whatever the case, look for an ASUS-made Nexus 10 to touchdown later this year on the Google Play Store and at retail outlets such as Best Buy.” What is it?

    1. It’s a Kevin Krause article, nuff said.

      1. Geeze, this guy can’t win with y’all can he? :(

        1. He’s an a$$hole.

          1. Couldn’t hold back a small chuckle at that… ;)

    2. Apparently Kevin’s never heard of Betteridge’s Law of Headlines either.

      1. You mean: HAS Kevin heard of Betteridge’s Law of Headlines?
        :)

  5. Well, Samsung will go forward their Tizen OS project, so there we go with Samsung ditching Android… and that means Google will get away from Samsung soon…

    1. what cracks me up is you make it sound like fact lol

    2. Samsung will never ditch android, tizen is just for emerging markets, just like Firefox os. They’ve done it before with their other OS (forgot what it’s called but tizen is basically a successor to it) so stop freaking out that they’ll leave android, without it they’ll be nothing.

      1. Bada?
I agree with you, Android made them millions of $, no way they will ditch it. And it will be very tough to get their OS to the same level of recognition as Android now is.

    3. we can only hope…im tired of their cheap korean made crap…bring me something solid

      1. lol, ill give you something solid, come kiss my ass

        1. I thought this was america!?

          1. You sound like a racist dude. “Korean made crap?” Yeah this is America, but you don’t have to be intolerant.

          2. Bang your head hard on a table please.

  6. Sounds like the new Transformer Infinity might morph into the new Nexus 10 just like the original Memo turned into the first Nexus 7.

  7. From phonedog.com:

UPDATE: Now Geek.com has shared an
image of an inventory screen from an unnamed retailer that clearly shows
“NEXUS 10 16G” as the model, “GOOGLE NEXUS 10” as the description and
    “ASUS” as the brand.

Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal’s Amir Efrati, source of the Samsung-made new Nexus 10 rumor, has sent out a tweet
explaining that his original tweet meant that Samsung was the
manufacturer of the existing Nexus 10 and that Sundar Pichai didn’t
clarify which company would be behind the new model. Looks like this
ASUS Nexus 10 rumor just got a lot more serious.

  8. Either way, I like what Asus and Samsung have done with tablets.

  9. love my Nexus 10. would be interesting to see what Samsung would do with a new and improved model. Apple should be worried.

  10. I actually got the Samsung rep at my local best buy to pseudo confirm this. I was telling my girlfriend that the nexus 10 was the best samsung tablet and he said sammy doesn’t make the nexus 10 and that Asus makes all the internals and I was like gasp I even asked him if he was mistaken for the n7.

  11. I keep waiting for the Nexus 10 to come close to the 7 pricing. $200-250 is my number for gen 1

    1. Huh. I never thought of that. Let me go see what the Nexus 10 has. To see if I’d be content with what it offers if I buy it this year. It’ll only be a year old and last year tech was really good.

Also, it’ll be an upgrade from my Nexus 7 (1st Gen) so I shouldn’t have any problems. Hmm… Thanks for the thought.

  14. how do you go from:

“The latest rumor says Google is going with ASUS, the company they partnered with on the Nexus 7.”

    to:

“But you have to wonder if there are other reasons Google and Samsung did not renew the lease on the Nexus 10.”

    IT’S A RUMOR…GO AWAY TROLL!!!!

    1. I thought Kevin went and bought an iPhone and left us?

  15. Considering that I ordered a Nexus 10 for my mum and ended up sending it
plus two replacement units back for the same bugs, I hope the rumor is
    true.
ASUS just makes the best quality devices.

    1. I too sent two nexus 10s back due to light bleed…was not impressed

      1. Light bleed was the least worrying of my bugs. My N10s closed apps randomly, didn’t let new apps open at all and changed the wallpaper at their own will.

  16. So, we’ll have another Nexus device with borked GPS and screen issues. Does Google even WANT to compete in tablet sales?
