If you’re in the market for a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 then head over to Woot.com and see the daily deal they’re dangling in front of everyone’s faces. They have the 10.1 inch S Pen tablet for $330. It’s the 16GB version and it’s refurbished, but for this price (it’s usually $500) you won’t find much better anywhere else. The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 features a 1.4GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, a 5 megapixel camera with flash as well as a 1.9 megapixel front-facing camera, a 7,000 mAh battery, the ability to expand memory up to 64GB with a microSD card slot, and more.
As with most Woots this thing is available for a limited time only — about 9 hours (or until it’s all sold out) as of the time of this writing — so you’ll want to move fast. Price point is lower than the Nexus 10, but it’s refurbished. I’d still pick the Nexus 10 for the display, and the openness of the platform, over the Note, but still, this isn’t a bad deal.
Openness? If the Nexus 10 is anything like the Nexus 7 — which is partially locked-down, then the Note is more open/accessible.
And despite the claims of some, Kies is completley optional and not needed for the tablet to operate/update/etc…
But regardless, both of these devices are Android, do what you want with them.
I’d only go with a Nexus 10 over a Note, if I were into TEGRA based gaming. Outside of that, the Note has the advantage IMO, especialy with an integrated WACOM; which is why I added one to my colleciton of tablets and it’s the first one I bought for more than just compatibility testing.
Care to explain about the Nexus 7 being partially locked down? I’m in the market for a new tablet and that was one of the ones I was considering buying. The Nexus devices are generally the most open.
The N10 has the Exynos processor from Samsung. Also, not sure what you mean by the Nexus’ being locked down…
The nexus 10 has a samsung dual core a15 processor, not a tegra.
My bad on the proc, which poses a different question, specifically towards Epic…
As for partial locked down, the Nexus 7 requires rooting to use a USB thumb-drive; something none of the other tablets I work with do — of course if Google would only go back to implementing a SD card…
And this next one is subjective based on one’s security concerns, but I’ve already found it annoying: I can’t open an APK attachment in email on an N7 — with unknown sources enabled of course; this would help when sending builds to clients.
Anyways, all of the things I heard about the Samsung were either overblown, or sorted out by the time I bought a Note 10.1; and we’re all screen snobs, but the screen on the Note is a big step above earlier tablets like the XOOM of the same rez.
The inability to open an APK on via email is a limitation of the Gmail application, not Android. There’s an app in the Play Store to resolve that, called APKatcher.
As for Kies, I know it’s optional. SD Card readers work out of the box on the Nexus 10 (and the 7, too, you just need a 3rd party non-root utility to mount it), if you have an OTG host cable. The Nexus 4, not so much, but that’s more of a hardware limitation (so Google claims).
This is such a good deal and I likely would’ve purchased without hesitation, if they offered the 32gb version at a low price as well. I’m still torn between the Note 10.1 and the Note 8.0 (even though the price point of the Note 8.0 is way higher than I anticipated).
It has a SD slot so you could just buy a cheap SD for it

If you’re going to be drawing, even 10 inches is cramped. I have a ThinkPad Tablet (10-inch) (and a Galaxy Note (1)). I am not much of an artist, but when sketching, I can really feel the need for a 12 or even 13 inch surface to draw on. You can do it on 10 inches, but I would urge you to make a mock-up of the two screens and try some writing keeping in mind how you’ll be holding the devices and where you’ll be resting your palm.
Not for drawing. It’s for making comments on pdf docs, as well as separate note taking in meetings.
