Amidst all of the ranting and raving about the iPhone 5 let’s not forget that Amazon is now shipping some pretty interesting devices of its own. The updated Amazon Kindle Fire and Amazon Kindle Fire HD 7.0 are now shipping, and now available to those who weren’t in on the pre-sale opportunity.
The updated Kindle Fire looks almost identical to the original, though it does benefit from some updated internals. It still has a dual-core processor and a 7 inch display, and is a little faster than last year’s model. More importantly, it’s also a little cheaper as it starts at just $159.
Meanwhile, the Kindle Fire HD 7.0 features a 7 inch display with a resolution of 1280×800 and comes with TI’s 1.2GHz OMAP 4470 dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and more.
Don’t forget that both devices utilize Android 4.0, but you wouldn’t know unless Amazon told you considering how heavily they’ve customized the Kindle Fire’s user interface. Models start at just $200 and you can get started here.
Very neat but I’ll wait for a 10″ Nexus tablet from Google.
Hopefully Google finds a better manufacturer this time. Someone who understands quality control so they don’t have half the units returned with hardware defects caused by lazy factory workers.
I’m not liking the huge bezel, especially compared to the original Kindle Fire and Nexus 7. Not too pocket friendly or that easy to hold in one hand.
Sorry Quentyn Kennemer but this is a terrible write up. First off, I’m not sure but what’s different on the $159 kindle than last year? And you’re mistaken the 7in HD model only has the omap 4430 (4460) and only the 8.9in HD’s get the 4470 treatment
Just like it said, a little faster, running 4.0 and only $159 compared to last years model
I’m sorry this is a terrible write up Quentyn Kennemer. I’m not sure myself but what’s improved on the new $159 fire? Details please. And the the 7.0HD version is NOT 4470 its actually the 4460 previously 4440 until renamed. Not the same treatment
Really? If you know enough to realize the error in the listed processor, you know that this is not an in-depth article on Amazon’s new offerings — it’s just a note that says “hey, the new Kindles are shipping.”
Well knowing the bang for your buck before you swipe your card is must have know how for an serious android tech enthusiast
Will rent this at gizmotakeout.com first and try it out. Sounds like fun
It’s time to battle the kindle fire hd and the nexus 7
