Sony Could be Working on a True PS Vita Successor, Reports Claim

Sony’s debut of the PlayStation Portal a while back wasn’t exactly the revolutionary return to form that many thought it would be, especially given the company’s history with impressive devices like the PSP and PS Vita. With that in mind, it looks like the Japanese gaming giant is looking to make a big comeback in the handheld gaming scene.

New reports suggest that Sony is currently working on a new handheld device which will be able to natively run PS5 games (the Portal is mainly a streaming device), in a bid to compete against the likes of the Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck, and several other modern handhelds. That said though, the system is still in the early stages of development and a launch could still be years away (if it ever sees the light of day, that is).

While the PS Portal is able to stream games, it lacks the power to run them natively, which somewhat limits its capabilities as far as handheld gaming goes; by contrast, consoles like the Nintendo Switch, ASUS ROG Ally, and Steam Deck allow players to download and install games directly onto their system.
