The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 is the latest clamshell foldable from the South Korean tech giant. The features the latest smartphone hardware, a slightly tweaked design, and of course the use of Samsung’s Galaxy AI. But how does it fare against competing products? In this article, we’ll take a look at the Galaxy Z Flip 6 versus the Huawei Pocket 2.
The Huawei Pocket 2 was announced earlier this year and it is the latest entry in the Huawei Pocket series of clamshell foldables. It has a unique design and interesting hardware, but can it hold up against the competition? Let’s find out!
The way Huawei has marketed the Pocket 2 is that they want it to be viewed not just as another gadget, but a fashion/lifestyle product. It is quite obvious from its design that it definitely looks very different compared to the competition.
The Flip 6, on the other hand, seems to have largely kept the design from its predecessor. It has flatter edges, but otherwise it still retains that signature Samsung look. Is that a good or a bad thing? That’s up to your personal preferences to decide, but if you want something a bit more unique, the Huawei Pocket 2 will definitely turn heads.
In terms of dimensions, the Huawei Pocket 2 measures 170 x 75.5 x 7.3 mm unfolded, and 87.8 x 75.5 x 15.3 mm folded. The Flip 6 measures 165.1 x 71.9 x 6.9 mm unfolded and 85.1 x 71.9 x 14.9 mm folded. As you can see, the Flip 6 is slightly thinner versus the Huawei Pocket 2.
It is also lighter coming in at around 187g, while the Pocket 2 weighs around 200g.
In the display department, the Huawei Pocket 2 has a larger 6.94-inch foldable screen versus the Flip 6 which has a 6.7-inch display. Both phones feature a 120Hz refresh rate. The Flip 6 has a higher peak brightness of 2,600 nits, while the Pocket 2 has a peak brightness of 2,200 nits.
The resolution of both phones are different, but the smaller Flip 6 display does give it a higher pixel density of 426 PPI, versus the Huawei Pocket 2 which has a 420 PPI. That being said, it’s not a particularly huge difference.
The Flip 6 does walk away the clear winner in the external display area. The handset has a 3.4-inch outer display, while the Pocket 2 has a circular 1.15-inch display cutout. It’s functional, but it also means that you won’t be getting as much use out of it compared to the Flip 6.
In the hardware department, it’s hard to beat the Flip 6’s use of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. The Huawei Pocket 2 uses an unknown octa-core chipset. We can’t speak to its performance, but due to the sanctions, Huawei has been falling behind in terms of its chipset designs.
They are slowly catching up, but for now, we’ll have to give it to the Flip 6 and its Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. Both phones do come with 12GB of RAM. The Flip 6 will support up to 512GB of storage, while the Pocket 2 goes up to 1TB.
As for its batteries, the Flip 6 uses a 4,000mAh battery with support for 25W wired charging, 15W wireless, and 4.5W reverse wireless. The Huawei Pocket 2 has a larger 4,520mAh battery with 66W wired charging, 40W wireless, and 5W reverse wireless. If battery size and charging speeds are important, then the Pocket 2 could be a better choice.
Software is one area that we have to highlight. Since Huawei no longer officially uses Android, they are using their own HarmonyOS software. For now, the build that comes bundled with the phone is essentially a forked version of Android as it is built based on AOSP.
Huawei does eventually plan to transition to a platform that they’ve built entirely from the ground up. What does this mean for app support? Huawei has surprisingly does a decent job at convincing some major app developers to create apps for HarmonyOS. Depending on your needs, you might be able to find a HarmonyOS version of an app you’re using, or a close alternative.
For others, you might not be able to find a suitable replacement. Since phones are more than just their hardware, the lack of Android app support and a smaller ecosystem compared to Android will have its limitations. It’s something to strongly consider if you’re leaning towards the Huawei Pocket 2.
We suppose the biggest issue here is availability. Due to ongoing sanctions against Huawei by the US government, buying the Huawei Pocket 2 in the US is almost impossible. However, for our readers living in other parts of the world where the handset is available, the Pocket 2 is priced starting at $1,000. This is almost on par with the Galaxy Z Flip 6 which is priced at $1,099.
The difference in price isn’t particularly huge, but there are other factors to consider like its software and app compatibility as we mentioned above. If you’re interested, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is available for purchase, which you can do so by ordering it through Samsung’s Amazon page here.
