In 2022, popular repair shop iFixit announced a partnership with Samsung. This partnership was supposed to make DIY repairs easier and more affordable compared to sending it in to Samsung directly. Unfortunately, it looks like that partnership has officially come to an end.
According to the post on iFixit’s blog, it seems that attempting to deliver on their promise proved to be harder than they thought. The post claims that getting official parts to local repair stores was difficult due to the costs involved. In some cases, it was so expensive that some customers simply opted to replace their devices rather than repair them.
iFixit also claims that Samsung continued to use designs that involved a lot of blue. This made it difficult when it came to disassembly, and it also meant that they had to sell pre-glued bundles that resulted in increased costs. That being said, this doesn’t mean that iFixit will no longer support Samsung devices.
The company will continue to sell parts and repair kits and will clearly state which parts are original or aftermarket. They will retain the existing repair manuals on their website, but will not collaborate with Samsung for future manuals. In a statement made to The Verge, iFixit CEO and co-founder Kyle Wiens revealed that they had tried to renegotiate a contract, but failed to reach an agreement.
