Samsung finally brings back OLED burn-in protection
There are many advantages to using OLED screens. They offer more punchy and saturated colors. They’re also more energy efficient. But the problem is that they can cause burn-in. This is why phone manufacturers usually offer some kind of protection, but Samsung decided to remove OLED burn-in protection in the One UI 6.0 update.
Thankfully, the company has come to their senses. In the latest One UI 6.1 update to their phones, Samsung has decided to bring back OLED burn-in protection. For those unfamiliar, burn-in on OLEDs happens when a static image or text is left on the screen for too long. This causes a literal burn on the display which is irreversible.
How burn-in protection works, at least on Samsung’s phones, is that the UI constantly shifts by a few pixels every few minutes. This means that static text and images, like the text and symbols in your status bar, aren’t left in place for too long. The movement is minute and doesn’t affect the overall performance or experience, but it’s enough to prevent burn-in.
We’re not sure why Samsung removed the protection in the One UI 6.0 update. Maybe they removed it by accident, but either way, it’s good to see that it’s back. If you’re worried about the longevity of your Samsung phone display, then make sure you’re updated to One UI 6.1 ASAP.
