Despite being launched way back in 2017, the Switch has maintained its status as one of Nintendo’s most profitable systems ever (insert ‘it prints money‘ meme here), reaching 139.36 million units sold. The data comes from Nintendo, following the company’s report on its most recent earnings release.
This figure also includes around 6.9 million Switch units sold during three months that ended on December 31, 2023. During the same timeframe, Nintendo also states that 66.87 million Switch software units were sold. The company likewise listed the top ten best-selling first-party titles for the system, which continues to feature Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at the number one spot:
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (60.58 million)
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons (44.79 million)
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (33.67 million)
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (31.61 million)
- Super Mario Odyssey (27.65 million)
- Pokemon Sword / Pokemon Shield (26.17 million)
- Pokemon Scarlet / Pokemon Violet (24.36 million)
- Super Mario Party (20.34 million)
- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (20.28 million)
- New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (17.20 million)
More than half a decade old at this point, the Nintendo Switch has been sold in different special edition models as well as hardware configurations, which include the compact Switch Lite and Switch OLED model.
Over the past year, multiple rumors of an upcoming Switch sequel have flooded the internet, with industry analysts and leakers claiming that Nintendo will unveil the console this year.
