While Nokia’s mobile device business is mostly handled by HMD Global now, the Finnish telecom brand still maintains a healthy wireless connectivity sector, specializing in tech such as 5G hardware. With that in mind, the company recently announced that it has entered into a new cross-license agreement with Honor, which covers fundamental inventions in 5G and other cellular technologies on behalf of both Nokia and Honor.
According to Nokia, this new agreement with Honor is the fourth major smartphone agreement that Nokia has concluded in the past 12 months. Susanna Martikainen, Chief Licensing Officer Mobile Devices at Nokia says that the agreement highlights “the strength of Nokia’s patent portfolio and decades-long contributions to cellular standards and other technologies.” As per her full statement:
“We are delighted to have concluded an amicable patent cross-license agreement with Honor, one of the leading players in the Chinese smartphone market. It is the fourth major litigation-free smartphone agreement that Nokia has concluded over the past twelve months and highlights once again the strength of Nokia’s patent portfolio and decades-long contributions to cellular standards and other technologies.”
Nokia claims that its patent portfolio is built on more than €140 billion put towards research and development since 2000, and includes around 20,000 patent families, as well as over 6,000 patent families declared essential to 5G.
