Google’s Chromecast platform is pretty cool because it allows users to cast stuff like photos or videos from their phones onto a larger display like a TV. Unfortunately, Samsung devices have never taken advantage of it. Instead of supporting Chromecast or Android TV, Samsung’s One UI only supports Miracast, which shouldn’t be surprising since that’s what their TVs use.
The good news is that if you don’t own a Samsung TV or would at least like to have more options, that might change soon. A report from Android Police has revealed a new labs menu hidden in One UI that basically allows users to cast content from their Samsung phone to a Chromecast-support device, whether it be the dongle or a TV with Chromecast support built into it.
As Android Police notes, it’s weird that Samsung has hidden this feature away in such a manner that it would be impossible for the average user to discover it. It is possible that maybe Samsung isn’t quite ready to launch it yet. Maybe they could be waiting for the launch of their new foldables this week to announce updates to One UI.
Users who want to take advantage of this feature right now by following these steps:
- Open your quick settings and long-press the Smart View tile
- Tap the three dot icon and tap on Settings
- Open the “About Smart View” menu
- Tap on the part of the screen that says “Smart View” 10 times
- Enter #00rtsp00 when prompted for a password
- Tap on the Google Cast toggle to enable it
