AI generated backgrounds are coming to Google Meet

Back in the day when you had to do a video conference, especially from home, you would try to choose an area in the house or room that wouldn’t be very distracting or show things you didn’t want others to see.

That will soon be a thing of the past because according to a tweet by Artem Russakovskii, Google has started to roll out support for AI generated backgrounds to its Google Meet platform. This will allow users to add backgrounds to their meetings based on what users ask of it.

For example, in the video demo above, users can type in something like “magical forest” as their background request, and the AI will then generate something similar. It’s actually pretty cool, although how extensive the AI is remains to be seen as the feature is still in the process of being rolled out.

Keep in mind that placing background images in video conference calls aren’t new. They have been around for a while and over the years, they’ve gotten a lot better at separating the user from the background to create a more seamless effect. The main difference here is that users now have infinitely more choices instead of having to pick stock images or upload something of their own.

This rollout is part of Google’s plan to introduce more AI support across its products and services, like we’ve already seen them do with things like Gmail, Google Docs, and more.
