Samsung Galaxy S7, Galaxy S8 receive an important update
Usually Android smartphone makers tend to keep their devices updated for about 3-5 years. We’re talking about 3 years worth of major Android updates and 5 years of security updates, but usually after that, handset owners are pretty much on their own, but that isn’t the case with Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and S8 handsets.
Both handsets were released about 5-6 years ago which means that technically they’re past what Samsung had promised in terms of after sales support, but Samsung has actually issued an important update for both handsets that apparently fixes an issue with the GPS in the phones.
Presumably this must be a very critical bug because otherwise Samsung probably would not have bothered. The update will bump the Galaxy S7’s firmware to G93xFXXU8EVG3, while the Galaxy S8 will have the G95xFXXUCDVG4 version number. If this sounds familiar, it is because recently, Samsung issued an update for the Galaxy S10 as well.
It also looks like the Galaxy S7 and S8 won’t be the oldest phones to receive an update. A report from GalaxyClub.nl has revealed that Samsung is apparently preparing a similar update for the 2015 Galaxy S6 series and also the Galaxy S9. We’re not sure how many users are still holding on to these phones at this point in time, but it’s good to see that Samsung is still pushing out updates for these older devices even though there probably aren’t too many users left.
