Possible next-gen Nest WiFi spotted at the FCC
It has been almost 3 years since Google last refreshed its Nest WiFi mesh router, which means that it is most probably due to a refresh soon (unless Google plans to axe the lineup, which we doubt will be happening anytime soon, if at all).
For those who have been hoping for an update, you’re in luck because thanks to a sighting at the FCC, it appears that Google could be getting ready to launch a new model soon. According to the FCC documents, it has been suggested that these new models will support WiFi 6E.
In case you’re unfamiliar, WiFi 6E is a newer version of the WiFi 6 protocol. One of the key differences is that with WiFi 6E, it can connect to 6GHz frequencies. Given that there aren’t that many devices that utilize the 6GHz frequencies, it means that for those that do, it can help free up the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies for older devices, potentially allowing them more bandwidth to load content faster.
We did previously hear about the possibility of a Nest WiFi refresh back in June where it was suggested that the next-gen Nest WiFi device could bring back the unified design. The FCC filing doesn’t make mention of the design so we’ll have to wait for an official announcement to find out. When that will take place remains unclear, but if we had to venture a guess, maybe Google will announce it alongside the Pixel 7 smartphones in the coming months.
