Telegram confirms a Premium subscription will be launching this month

Subscriptions are all the rage these days and it’s not hard to see why. Instead of users paying a one-time fee, companies can now ensure a steady flow of revenue by charging users a subscription fee instead.

This is why it doesn’t come as a surprise to learn that Telegram is hopping on board that train by officially announcing Telegram Premium, a new subscription service that the company will be launching this month. This is according to a post by the company’s CEO, Pavel Durov, who explained the reason why.

“The problem here is that if we were to remove all limits for everyone, our server and traffic costs would have become unmanageable, so the party would be unfortunately over for everyone.

After giving it some thought, we realized that the only way to let our most demanding fans get more while keeping our existing features free is to make those raised limits a paid option.”

At this point it is unclear what kind of features a Premium subscription will be bringing to the table, apart from what was hinted at when the feature was discovered in the beta, but according to Durov, all existing features right now will continue to remain free for users. There will be new Premium-exclusive features, of course, but if you enjoy Telegram the way it is, you can keep using it for free.

Durov also notes that even though some features might be locked behind a paywall, there are some that non-Premium users can enjoy, like extra-large documents, media, and stickers that are sent by Premium users. We expect more details will be revealed at launch, so check back with us later for more updates.
