Samsung is going all-in with the Galaxy Z Flip 4

0

For many, the idea of having a foldable phone is a concept that we never really thought would be possible. Yet here we are, four years in Samsung’s reign of dominance in the space, while other phone makers are now starting to play some catch-up. Without a doubt, the best foldable phone in 2021 was the Galaxy Z Fold 3, but the Galaxy Z Flip 3 offered a different take on the form factor.

Instead of putting a foldable tablet in your pocket, the Z Flip 3 was really nothing more than the Galaxy S21 with lesser cameras, a smaller battery, and a foldable screen. Samsung also managed to bring the price down to line up with traditional flagships, and it definitely doesn’t hurt that carriers were practically giving the phone away during the holiday season.

While there is no reason to believe that the Galaxy Z Fold line is going anywhere, it’s becoming more and more obvious that Samsung is shifting its focus to the Galaxy Z Flip series. According to Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), Samsung is likely to start shipping Z Flip 4 display panels sometime in April. However, the big difference here is that shipments are expected to come in around 8.7 million, compared to the 5.1 million panels shipped for the Galaxy Z Flip 3.

Surprisingly, there have been a few rumors here and there regarding the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the potential for an S Pen silo along with a more durable display. But this is really the first time that we’re hearing much of anything when it comes to the Galaxy Z Flip 4.

Considering the success that Samsung saw with both of its foldable phones in 2021, it comes as little surprise to see the company swinging for the fences. Hopefully, Samsung can continue to push the envelope in the space, while still listening to things that the consumer wants. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 are expected to be announced sometime in August, alongside a new Galaxy Watch 5.
