Samsung is rolling out an update to fix the Galaxy S22’s throttling

Over the past week or so, Samsung has been in hot water as it was discovered the company implemented a tool that essentially throttled the performance of thousands of apps. The tool in question is called the Game Optimization Service (GOS), but is not user-accessible and currently, there is no way for users to turn this feature on or off. In response, Geekbench ended up de-listing several of Samsung’s phones due to “benchmark manipulation”.

Samsung responded to these claims and promised to provide the user with more control over GOS, but it was unclear as to when the update would arrive for the Galaxy S22. As it turns out, Samsung moved pretty quickly, as an update is already rolling out to Galaxy S22 owners in the company’s home country of South Korea (via XDA).

The update weighs in at 465.31MB, includes the March Android Security Patch, and carries the following build numbers:

Unfortunately, there’s no timeline as to when we can expect to see this update arrive in other regions, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if it began appearing in the coming days. According to a post on the Samsung Korea Community Forums, the update includes a “Game Performance Management Mode”, which allows the user to manually adjust both CPU and GPU performance. It definitely seems like we’ll just be getting a few extra toggles to allow apps to run as well as we would expect them to.

This isn’t the first time that Samsung has been intentionally limiting performance, as the company was found to be doing just that a few years ago. Since then, the company has gone from one of the worst offenders when it comes to software updates to one of the best, and some could even argue that Samsung is doing a better job than Google. Especially when you consider that the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro’s latest update has already been pushed back until later in March.
