Microsoft fixes Teams bug that prevented Android users from calling 911

Last week, it was reported that Microsoft Teams for Android had a weird bug that actually prevented users from calling 911. The good news is that according to a report from XDA’s Mishaal Rahman, it looks like the company has since rolled out an update for the app that has addressed the problem.

If you do use Microsoft Teams on your Android smartphone, you’ll want to update ASAP because you never know when you might need to call for help, and a weird and potentially dangerous app bug should not get in your way.

That being said, there was a chance that this might not have affected too many users. This is because in order to replicate the bug, the user needed to have Teams installed on their Android phone that has Android 10 or later, and not be signed into their Teams account. According to a post by Google when the problem was publicized:

“Based on our investigation we have been able to reproduce the issue under a limited set of circumstances. We believe the issue is only present on a small number of devices with the Microsoft Teams app installed when the user is not logged in, and we are currently only aware of one user report related to the occurrence of this bug. We determined that the issue was being caused by unintended interaction between the Microsoft Teams app and the underlying Android operating system.”

For those who prefer a more detailed and slightly more technical breakdown that could perhaps allow you to better understand Android and how it works, Rahman’s post on Medium actually dives into technical detail as to how this even occurred in the first place. It’s a good read if you have a few minutes to spare.
