Oppo teases a phone with a retractable popup camera

0

A lot of smartphones share a similar look these days, where on the back of the phone, there are an array of cameras, usually ranging from 2-3 modules. Apparently this is a design that Oppo isn’t a fan of because the company has since unveiled a new camera design that allows for the camera module to extend or retract as and when needed.

The idea here is that by allowing the camera to extend or retract, they can create a phone that’s slim when it needs to be, like when it’s in your pocket or when it’s on a table, but when you need to take a photo or video, the camera can extend forwards and activate.

Based on the video, there is still a bit of a camera hump on the back of the phone so honestly, we’re not sure how much can be gained by having a retractable camera system. For those worried that it might get damaged or wet, the company suggests that it has water-resistance and that when it detects that the phone is falling, it will retract the camera to prevent catastrophic damage.

The company says that they will reveal more about this particular concept on the 14th of December as part of its INNO World 2021 event, so check back with us then if you’d like to learn more about this new camera system that could potentially make its way into future Oppo smartphones.
