Material You theming arrives on the Samsung Galaxy S21 via One UI 4.0 Beta 2

0

About three weeks ago, Samsung introduced the One UI 4.0 beta program for everyone, allowing you to get a taste of Android 12 ahead of its final release. In the first beta, we didn’t see many changes, other than a few bugs that were causing issues with the UI response. Today, One UI 4.0 Beta 2 has landed, bringing with it Samsung’s twist on Material You.

Just like with Material You on Google Pixel devices running Android 12, a system theme can be created just from the colors found in whatever wallpaper you are using. You can jump into the Settings menu to view the different options available based on your wallpaper, before setting the theme. There are a total of five different color palettes to choose from, all of which aim to bring a more uniform experience to your Galaxy S21.

As noted by SamMobile, it seems that there’s a bug that won’t actually apply the theme automatically all of the time. Instead, you might find yourself needing to restart your phone a couple of times in order to get the theme to actually “stick”. This isn’t anything to be concerned with, as One UI 4.0 is still in beta. But this is also why we’re seeing Samsung make the beta program available to the public, so that any of these bugs can be discovered and squashed ahead of the final version release.

To be honest, we weren’t expecting to see Material You integrated so early in the beta cycle, but it’s definitely a welcome addition. Now that the Android 12 codebase has been merged with AOSP, it should be easier for smartphone makers to integrate the new features into their versions of Android.

The update is rolling out beginning today, and may take some time to arrive on your device of choice.
