Xiaomi will start offering three years of OS updates for its future devices

Most handset makers will typically offer their customers about 2 years worth of OS upgrades, and maybe 3 years of security updates. If you’re after a phone that has more than just 2 years of OS updates, then maybe Xiaomi could be the brand to consider as the company has confirmed that they will be offering future devices 3 years of OS updates.

Xiaomi’s Head of Product & Technology, Albert Shan, was speaking about the company’s software update commitment and in the process, revealed the company’s plans to offer 3 years of OS updates for future devices, starting with the Xiaomi 11T and 11T Pro handsets that are due to be announced soon.

“In continuation of this commitment to users, Xiaomi is further extending the life cycle of Xiaomi’s smartphones by ensuring three generations of Android operating system updates. This way, users can choose to use their current devices for a longer period, and enjoy the latest features along with it. At the same time, we will also provide users with security updates that ensure their devices operate securely for a longer period of time.”

That sounds good if you plan to get the 11T series, but what about Xiaomi’s other handsets? According to a company spokesperson, they told XDA, “Xiaomi is currently evaluating the possibility of bringing the extended Android system and security upgrades services to more Xiaomi devices.”

While 3 years is definitely on the same level as Apple’s iOS which is typically updated on devices as old as 5 years old, it’s a start, and hopefully we’ll see more companies get on board.
