Huawei will upgrade the internal storage for some of its older phones..for a small fee

When it comes to choosing your phone’s storage, this is very important because unlike buying a PC where you could add more storage later, upgrading the internal storage of your phone is rather difficult, if not impossible. The next best thing is to get an SD card, assuming your phone supports it to begin with.

Interestingly enough, alongside the announcement of the new Huawei P50 series, the company has also revealed that they will be giving users the option of upgrading the storage of their older phones. The first wave of devices that will be eligible for this upgrade are the Mate 9, Mate 10, Mate 20, Mate 30, P10, P20, and P30 series, save for the “Lite” models.

This program will essentially double up the storage on your phone, meaning that a 64GB phone will become 128GB, 128GB will become 256GB, and 256GB will become 512GB. This isn’t done for free though. Huawei will be charging customers about $57 for the upgrade, which honestly isn’t too bad.

The idea behind this upgrade is so that users can eventually upgrade to its HarmonyOS platform without having to format their phones and being forced to delete their files to make space for it, so it’s not entirely altruistic.  That being said, we’ve never seen such an offer by any other phone maker before, so we have to give Huawei credit for a pretty creative offer.

Right now it seems to be exclusive to China, but who knows, maybe Huawei will eventually expand it to the other markets it operates in.
