Android 13 could finally allow secondary profiles to make NFC payments
Unlike iOS, Google’s Android platform supports multiple user accounts, but similar to how Windows handles multiple user accounts, secondary accounts do have some limitations placed on them. This includes things like the ability to configure and make NFC payments using the phone.
Presumably this could have been done out of security concerns, but for those who have a secondary account on an Android device, it can be troublesome. The good news is that come Android 13 “Tiramisu”, Google could finally be removing those limitations and allowing secondary accounts to make NFC payments.
This is according to a report from XDA Developers who discovered new commits made on the AOSP Gerrit where there are descriptions that reference NFC payments for multi-users, as well as the ability to configure NFC payment settings by the user account. What this means is that in a future Android build, you could setup multi-user accounts and each account would then be able to setup their own payment method.
That being said, we’re not sure how many people actually share smartphones to this extent, but we suppose having the option can only be a good thing. Unfortunately, Android 13 is only launching in 2022 and even then, there’s no guarantee that Google will introduce this feature, so don’t get your hopes up just yet.
