RedMagic 6R Hero

The Nubia RedMagic 6R launches with a slimmer design

There’s one thing about gaming phones that may turn folks off from considering them, and that’s the gamer-centric design. These phones are more than powerful, and on many accounts, can easily rival the likes of the Galaxy S21’s and OnePlus 9’s of the world. Nubia is doing something about that with the newly-announced RedMagic 6R.

With the RedMagic 6R, you’ll find the Snapdragon 888 at the helm, either 8GB or 12GB of RAM, and a gorgeous 6.67-inch AMOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate. The awesome shoulder trigger buttons on the frame are returning, which have become a staple for RedMagic devices.

As for the cameras, RedMagic is keeping the same primary and ultrawide cameras, offering 64MP and 8MP sensors, respectively. But the RedMagic 6R includes a 5MP macro lens, along with a new 2Mp depth sensor. The selfie camera has also been upgraded, doubling the quality going from 8MP to 16MP.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is the battery, which has been shrunken down to just 4,200mAh. This is a far cry from the 5,050mAh cell found on the RedMagic 6 and RedMagic 6 Pro. Charging speeds have also been downgraded to 55W for the version launching in China, and 30W for the global variant.

Nevertheless, the RedMagic 6R makes certain sacrifices in order to deliver a more flagship design. The body is more sleek and slim, the camera module has been redesigned, and the phone itself, save for a special edition colorway, looks like a true flagship and not something like a niche device.

The RedMagic 6R is launching in China on June 1st, with pre-orders available now in the country. Pricing starts at CNY2,999 (~$470) for the base model and goes up to CNY3,999(~$627) for the 12GB/256GB variant We’re sure that there are plans to bring this to more markets, but Nubia has not revealed when or where that might occur.
