It might be time for Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL owners to upgrade

If you’re still holding onto the Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL smartphone, it might be time to consider upgrading your handset, especially if you’re concerned about security. This is because according to Android Police, they were told by Google that both these handsets will be entering their end-of-life.

What this means is that both these devices will no longer be receiving major Android updates, and nor will they be getting anymore guaranteed security updates. Google has recently issued a security update for the Pixel 2 and 2 XL earlier today, and while the last promised update was originally scheduled for October, it seems that Google has one more planned for December, following that you’re pretty much on your own.

This isn’t to say that if something major pops up that Google will be abandoning either device, it’s just that it’s no guarantee that they will bother to update them. Given how old the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL handsets are, it does seem to be in line with how most Android handset makers approach their devices, although Google did surprise us when the Pixel 2 and 2 XL were eligible for the Android 11 update.

In the meantime, if you are still a fan of the Pixel series, Google did recently announce their newer Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G, both of which are pretty decent handsets with relatively affordable price tags, so those might be worth your consideration.
